Offline | My dad has a similar story. He went into town to get his licence but the Police man says oh no, you don't need to do the test, I've seen you driving around here for a while now Kind of shows in his driving style though. He doesn't know how to do gentle curves, he just drives in straight lines which is particularly annoying and puke inducingJan 06 MCS Checkmate |

| MINI Traitor | Andrew, thanks for your comments on this ![]() There are so many things to talk about here. 1. if Australian governments were serious about road safety there would be investing all petrol excise in road development... but they don't think of it as a priority. The fact that the Bris-Syd-Melb is not divided carriageway is farcical. 2. whenever you are moving masses of people faster than they can run themselves there is always going to be some injuries. In the context of the number of people that die or are rendered unwell, the road toll is a distant cousin to smoking related injuries/deaths. By banning cigarettes we could save far more than we can ever save on the roads.... 3. I believe that while state governments have a "show me the money" outlook on road safety, the greater cause will continue to be eroded. We have already seen the raw data, and statistics being sqewed, or worse to justify the "speed kills" mantra. 4. The media cannot perform objective analysis of the situation while their advertising departments are proped up by masses of public money justifying "speed kills". This has had the nice little sideffects of brainwashing the masses and making objectors to SK seem politically incorrect, further marginalising their cause. 5. While I can see that driver training could cause overconfidence in some, the fact that students are not taught how to panic stop a car is unbelieveable. They are just told not to speed, and you'll be right. Lastly, I actually kept count of the number of interactions I had with the LAW last year, and I had my speed checked over 200 times last year. No other aspect of my driving was checked, not a licence check, RBT, nothing. Why is it that no one else in the community can see anything wrong with this? |

Offline | Andrew, You've lost me now. There should be nothing more important than skill levels and attitude. Currently not (hardly, relatively) a cracker is spent in this area. |

| MINI2 Master | there was an article along these lines in motor a few months back, specifically regarding the number of male deaths to Prostate cancer being much higher than the number of deaths in cars, yet how many ads do you see telling you to go down to the doctor and get a finger up your bum? none, becuase the government can't make money out of it. |

| Whatev. | "How fast are you going now?" The mantra is deafening. It's like a bad song on the radio - once it gets into your head you cannot get it out. It must be one of the most successful advertising campaigns ever. Add me to the list of people with parents who got their licence simply by showing up at the police station. I refuse to go anywhere with my mother she is a menace on the road. She learnt to drive on a tractor. She still drives like she is driving a tractor and yes, she drives a white camry. ![]() |

Offline | They sure do earn a buck from ciggies though dont they..... Health warnings all over the packs, no advertising of any kind, even at POS (point of sale), according to Russell Crow (The Insider) absolutely no doubt about the link with lung cancer...no one else will say it... Listen to the boohaha regarding asbestos.... |

Offline | Swamos, I fully agree with you, particularly your last point. Alcohol and not wearing seat belts are among the top killers after speeding (which, unlike alcohol and not wearing a seat belt is a very subjective measure) yet I've only been RTB once in 10 years and almost 300,000k's of driving. Sorry all, I'll climb down off my high horse and let some others have the floor. Liam - look what you started! ![]() Jan 06 MCS Checkmate |

Offline | Im surprised you guys have missed the whole RBT thing. I can say in all seriousness, that basically once a fortnight, I'll get RBT'd on the way down to Pie on Sunday. Most of the time through Belmont/Swansea (single car units that flag me in) and weekend before last it was just down past the Doyalson Exchange. They had the full two car crew, paddy wagon and two trucks. Waved me in just as I went over the hill. Theyre out early. Since I got the MINI I must have been RBT'd 10 or 15 times I reckon. - Global Moderator - MY BLOG - Global Procrastinator - ![]() ... | MINI2 Master | i get RBT'd at least every week or two, but that's 'cos I live close to the scruburbs where seemingly a lot of people drink and drive (and drive unreg'd cars, and have 15 babies before they are 20 etc. etc.) I'm changing my name to Cletus next week. |

| Boy who made the wolf cry | I think RDT will disappear up its own backside in the next 6 months... sorry to say but it is soooo flawed, that most will get off. Wait til people start claiming "I have not smoked or used speed for 'X' amount of time - lets go to court." I dont do drugs - never have - but go to parties where people do some pretty stuffed up things... I have walked walk out once or twice going - "Well I may as well have smoked, cause I smell of it enough!" Also my sister has perscription speed and drives - what happens there? BTW - If I got asked to wait 5 mins on the side of the road when I was on my way somewhere, I'd be royally ******ed off and I'd let them know it. I think a P plater in a MCS would attract a fair bit of police attention ![]() Todd PROJECT POLARIS - Die Wiedergeburt eines kultautos |
