Car enthusiasts of Australia can help in a practical way – a way we can all understand.
Please bring your old hand tools and your spare tools to the NRMA Motorfest on Australia Day and drop them off in Macquarie Street (look for the sign in Macquarie St, corner Bridge St, at the VSCCA area).
The coastal villagers have lost their possessions. Their trucks, bikes, boats, generators, pumps, etc are all needed to reconstruct their lives. They can be repaired by survivors if they have tools to replace lost tools. This repair should start as soon as possible before rust destroys the equipment forever.
· Fixing only one boat may provide food for a village.
· Putting practical people back to work has a powerful psychological effect. Refugees will return to their devastated villages if they have the tools to do things.
Noel McIntosh, Secretary of VSCCA, encouraged by CMC and many others, has set up an Australian group, Tools 4 Tsunami to provide basic toolkits to the many tsunami survivors in all affected countries. The group is collecting hand tools mainly via the old car movement which has a good understanding of why and what is needed. Their aim is to quickly collect the tool kits for distribution by carefully selected public and private groups, engineers, and the aid agencies as part of the second phase of aid.

Project Objective
Collect and distribute 500 toolkits to mechanically-capable survivors in the Indian Ocean area.
Kit to include ONLY flat spanners (metric & AF), socket spanners and wrench, pliers, screwdrivers, shifting spanner, hacksaw, wood saw, hammers, duct tape, electrical tape, tinsnips, hand drill and bits, chisels, machete, waterproof box/bag.
Many Australians have donated money but many want to do something practical or give goods. Donated money could buy replacement trucks and equipment but this is expensive and will take a long time. It is surely more efficient to fix what they have.
The aid agencies are doing an outstanding job of providing first aid, food and shelter. The second stage - recovery of equipment is also vital for the survival of the Indian Ocean disaster areas.
