Offline | Also stay off channel 31 to 38 these are repeater channels. Also channel 22 and 23 is not for voice, but data, so it would be advisable to stay off this as well, especially in rural areas as the farmers use these channels to control pumps and gates around their properties. ![]() |

Offline | That's interesting, I didn't know about 22 and 23, I know a lot of 4WD Clubs use 15 and if you come across a Great Divide Tours convoy, you will find us on 16, but we are very friendly. The best advice i can give is, don't stake your life on a radio call, just in case you miss one. Other than that, used properly and that means not too much crappy chatter, they can be very very useful when in a convoy of two or 42 MINI's Vic ![]() |

Offline | Sensible question,UHF radio (and any radio for that matter) only has a certain range, ( the more power output the longer the range, the higher the aerial the longer the range) My 4Wd units have 5 watts of power and when mated to a 2 metre aerial (which costs over $250 i might add) on the bull bar, in the desert Regions of Australia i can get up to 25 kilometres of range. Of course i have had a lot more when on high spots, remember UHF works only on line of sight. (I won't get into DB gains on aerials and how this changes the wave of the radio signal) Anyway, to get better range out of UHF radios because they are used for all sorts of reasons in the country, there are towers built all around the place with a booster or repeater. Your signal goes into one of these repeaters and can be repeated through several other towers/repeaters, the end result is you can get upwards of 200 kilometres of range. Now I don't use these, so i may be a little wrong from here, but you broadcast on channells 1-8 and they receive on channels 30-38 up the line (I think?) Certain areas have certain UHF channels allocated to them, so you need to know what channel the repeater is on for the area you pass throgh if you intend to use them, and the person you are calling needs to know you will be trying to call them so they can monitor the corresponding repeater channel to receive your call. there is a list of repater channels for all over Australia on the following website www.exploroz.com.au Hope this helps a little. vic ![]() |

Offline | Crikey this is getting pretty complicated. Where's Al, he has a good story about a radio call from me. ![]() I need to get a better radio I reckon, any recommendations, sensible ones, I don't really want to spend $400, around $100 would be great, or less, if possible. |
