Offline | Targa Tasmania Hi, The time is drawing close, we will soon departing to compete in Targa Tasmania For those who don't know, Targa Tasmania is closed road tarmac rally. Over 6 days you compete against the clock on closed road stages, varying from 1 to 47km in length. Targa Tasmania is generally considered to be the ultimate tarmac rally, and attracts numerous competitors from Australia and around the world. If anyone is interested in getting a taste for the event, there is a link to a site with some incar footage from a previous year in a classic mini HERE I have been competing in my mini in circuit racing for some time. Almost a year ago I went on the "Tasminia" trip with other mini lovers. I was stunned by the amazing roads Tasmania has some of the best driving roads in the world, and is a mini drivers paradise After Tasminia, I decided (along with Stu Jones) to try to compete in Targa Tasmania.Stu and myself have allready competed in the East Coast Targa and Porscshe Mt Buller Sprint tarmac rallies. However, these are relatively short, and nowhere near as challenging as Targa Tassie. We are entered in the "drivetravel.com modern competition" along with 5 other minis. From the mini2 boards and clubmini there is Andrew Robinson (robbo) and navigator John Ladavac (Lad) Stuart Jones and navigator Steve Green (Warped). Also competing is the Grant Sherrin cooper S from Queensland and a Japanese entered cooper S. Competing in an imported John Cooper factory prepared Cooper is the experienced Craig Williams, who has won his class outright on several occasions. The only Bummer is that Boo (Andrew Jackson) is not coming with us. I know he desperately wanted to compete, but things conspired against him this year I hope he makes it next year Targa Tasmania is an FIA international rally, which has made things more complicated than usual preparing for the event. We all require FIA level international rally licenses, and full FIA safety gear etc. Also, both Stu and myself have had to "demodify" our cars to a significant degree to comply with regulations. For example, amongst many changes, I have had to remove my oil cooler, cold air intake and adjustable rear control arms. Other things such as electrical cutout switches, FIA fuel sampling point etc have been added. We leave on the boat to Tasmania on Friday, and have scrutineering on Sunday/Monday. Competition begins with the prologue on Tuesday 26th and concludes on Sunday 1st of May. The car is now fully prepared, and ready to race. Thanks to Boo for doing a professional job of putting all my stickers on Stu's car is almost ready My main aim in the rally is to come home safely without injury, and with the car in one piece I hope to have a great time, and enjoy the roads. It is going to be great fun going as a little mini team with Stu . Hopefully we will have time and some internet access to post some news of our progress Attached are some pics of my car ready to go, with all the stickers etc. Also, some shots showing some of the changes and additions I have had to make to the car to comply with the regulations. Cheers Robbo Mods: GO MADDIE and SPARKY! |

Offline | Robbo mcs you should also post this on the Racing forum, there are rally enthusiasts there from Canada, Mexico and other countries that will be very interested in your adventure. I've been thinking about Targa Newfoundland in Canada but yours sounds more interesting. Good luck. |

Offline | Hi, Targa Newfoundland is a "sister" event to Targa Tasmania. The people in Newfoundland looked at the Targa Tasmaniia set-up, and wanted to replicate it. As a result the they used the Tasmania event as a "template". Unfortunately for us, Targa Tasmania is now very well established. They can pick and choose cars, and it is actually quite hard to get accepted to the event. Also, the regulations are extremely tight and heavily policed. Newfoundland is still trying to establish itself, so it is much easier to get in, and the regulations are not as tightly policed (or so I am led to believe). I don't want to double post, so maybe I will post a link to this thread on the Racing page. Cheers Robbo Mods: GO MADDIE and SPARKY! |

Offline | Yeah, am interested and stoked that you guys got in. Wasn't there talk that even a JCW car could not participate due its modifications? I'm guessing you'll be running your Hartge kit still??? |

Offline | Hi, The JCW modification for the cooper S was not allowed This was despite the best efforts of BMW Australia who tried their best to get it through. However, we are in good company, the M3 CSL was also disallowed, as only 1400 were made world wide, and 1500 need to be made to comply The porsche GT3RS was also in the same boat.As a result we are running the stock supercharger. We have had to remove quite a bit of "go fast" stuff to comply, but I'm sure we will still be going fast enough to have a huge amount of fun Cheers Robbo Mods: GO MADDIE and SPARKY! |

Offline | Thanks for the write up Robbo Yep this is one of those events that I have spent too many years of my adult life thinking about and now its almost here. I do rather feel for AJ (Boo) as not only is he not able to come but we made him put the stickers on the cars!!!!! The ultimate torture. We are lucky to have two great MINI friends as our navigators in John and Steve, it makes it so much easier to share the event with someone as passionate in the cars as us. I am starting to get rather overwhelmed by the enormity of the event we have entered ourselves in and think this will only increase as the days draw closer. The complexity of logistics, accomodation, fuel, servicing all add up to a very steep learning curve. Anyway enough sentimental mumbo jumbo, lets get on with the show. Im pretty sure it will only really sink in as I drive the car onto the boat on Friday afternoon and we sail under the bridge and out Sydney Heads. Thanks for all the well wishes and plenty of posts to follow. Hopefully we wont be too tired for a daily update! Offline | I am fiddling with incar gear setup at the moment but there are significant restrictions on what you can do with the footage as they have sold the broadcast rights. Basically any footage we collect has to be provided to the broadcast company first. Then it can only really be used for personal use. If we want to use for "internet" there is a license fee of $500 per minute ![]() 2002 BRG MCS with more mods than can remember The thieves choice in race cars ![]() 2005 BEP MCS stock standard and staying that way |
