RDS change in Sydney on the weekend?

Hi All,

On the weekend some friends of mine were in my car checking out the whole TV/DVD thing I've got happening on the Sat Nav screen now, and were pressing buttons and playing around...

Ever since then, whenever I choose a station that displays an RDS name (westie FM 96.1, 2DAY, MMM, for example) the headunit shows the RDS PTY (priority - ROCK MUSIC, POP MUSIC, NEWS etc) for a few seconds before showing the actual station name. This PTY info was never displayed before.

Did one of my friends press a button to cause this to happen, or has everyone else in Sydney noticed this too?

I've been through all the settings and I can't locate a way to enable/disable this. There is a PTY button next to RDS, and all it is meant to do is display the PTY category for the current station when you press it... I've only ever seen REALLY REALLY OLD Boost head units (early 2002 loan cars) that display the PTY when you select the station, but from memory those units didn't have the PTY button next to the RDS button anyway, so it was just a different way for the same functionality to operate.

Any clues from fellow geeks who actually are curious and care about this? (As opposed to those who are thinking I'm a raving lunatic and should get a life )

Cheers,
Tim

i just had a play with the Boost HU in my Oct '02 S & worked out that if you hold down the PTY button it alternates between Manual & Auto PTY

Manual = PTY Info only when you hit the PTY button
Auto = When you change station it shows the Frequency, then PTY, then RDS

you beat me to it gaz

the idea of it is that where RDS has actually been implemented properly (i.e. Europe), rather than the typical half-baked way it has been here, you choose a 'genre' of station, and it automatically chooses the right one as you move between broadcast areas.
Yet another cool thing they have in europe that isn't economically justifiable here. (just like TMC)

Ah...yeah!
Maybe its something to do with the Greyhound results flashing over the Teletext which are interrupting the signal!

It is cheap and easy to setup RDS like in Europe (all new TX come with the parts to do it) it is the radio station that choose not to use it or fully set it up. Now I dream that OZZies (gov and companies) get their heads out of their ***** and start to make plans to support a TMC system, before we need it.

Over here in the USA they have hacked the system a bit and display the song title and singer as well (a no no under RDS STD but $hit happens)

Tim, when are you getting internet in the MINI so you can check the doggies odds on Austext and then place some online bets in traffic all on the way to work.

I just wish that the stations would actually turn it on. The only ones down here that have it (if I recall correctly) are Nova 100, Fox FM!

Yeah you're right, currently I have to phone bet, but that's easier as I have a bluetooth headset so can bet (talk) and drive. An iBurst card in my thinkpad would solve the internet issue though... and it would't be hard to get the laptop display on the sat nav screen either

oh the possibilities...
