Eagle NCT5's not available til end of May

I needed a new NCT5 195/55R16 yesterday. Everyone in Brisbane is out and cant get stock until the end of May. The comes after having to wait in Melboune for 4 days (at mini assists expence) waiting for a NCT5.

So I replaced both my fronts with Dunlop 3000a's and have a NCT5 which I payed $320 for in Melbourne with 5% wear sitting in my garage!

Why are these tyres in such short supply?

Ok, thats my whinge for the month

Do yourself a favour and buy yourself a set of non-runcraps.

$320, Ouch . I phoned around late last year and I was quoted $275 for the runflat NCT5's. I ended up biting the bullet and getting some non-runflat Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3's in 205/50-16 (for 16" X-lites). At $195, they were a fair bit cheaper than the NCT5's and so far I've been pretty happy with them.

Yes, I have non-runflats now.

I paid a premium due to the fact that the dealer KNEW we needed a tyre in a hurry and they were the only people able to source them quickly (they had one in stock). We were stuck there over NYE

Do new tyres like the 3000a have a 'wear in' period? I noticed a fair but of understeer in a test run this morning.

usually the first 50k or so it's a good idea to take it easy, until the release compound comes off the tyres. Either that or rip a 50m long burnout when leaving the tyre shop

Might be worth checking the pressures too, I usually find the tyre shops just fill them to the placard pressure, which is more for comfort than handling...

50k What your tyres last that long !!!!

Had mine 2 years done 22000 miles and had to replace the fronts alreeady

On a more serious note can I put 205's on to the standard 16" alloys, are they cheaper and better than run flats (considering replacing mine) also has anyone used the mobility pack and does it work ????

I think he means 50kms, not 50,000 kms

I got 205's put on. Cost me $199 a shoe.

On tyre pressures the guys doing the instructing at the MINIkhana said they all run their cars at 40psi, saying that it gives the tyre a better grip on the rim and better fuel economy also.

To me 40psi was quite high, I usually run my tyres at 36psi all round, but will give 40psi a go and see what happens.

Yep, you most certainly can. 205/50-16 is the one to go for as it has a rolling circumference very similar to the OEM 195/55-16. I think from memory the 205's are about 1.5% smaller than stock which means that your speedo reads slightly fast but 1.5% is still well within the 3% (I think it's 3) legal limit.

Think it's +/- 10%...but that could be wrong.

A replacement 215/50/16 tyre would be best suited to the OEM 195/55/16 tyre. It's rolling diameter is only 0.1% off!

This website helps calculate rolling diameters...

About the unavailibility of the NCT 5's...I phoned a tyre centre about 2 weeks ago, and he told me that the Dunlop runflats were much cheaper and better than the Goodyears, it sounded like the goodyears don't sell well, thats probably why they aren't in stock...

I wanted to know which of the runflat tyres were the better of the 2, cos my dealer told me that the 16" 7-fin spoke alloys thats coming on my Mini have Dunlop rubber. It was a quick phone call to a tyre dealer that a neighbour works at, and he said that If I must have runflats on the car, the Dunlops would be better.

I hope that I do get Dunlops with the 7-fin spoke alloys, cos the other day I saw a MCC with the same wheels but had Goodyears....

Don't you have to go 215/45-16 not 215/50-16?

Most of the available brands seem to be in 205/50-16 http://www.mini2.com/forum/faq.php?f...cement_t ires

I thought the wear in period was ~ 200km

I had the same problem when I needed to replace the fronts, having had the Eagles. Couldn't get any anywhere. Didn't want to drive on balding tyres, so got Michelin Pilot Precedas 205/50/16 non runflats. Very happy with them so far

I thought that too Jason, but in the Wheels tyre test they make a comment that supports Micky's recommendation. They say you only need to give the tyres 30-40kms. But I like Micky's burnout suggestions a bit better.

The Tire tech/general tire info section of tirerack.com has some interesting (or not so interesting - depending on your point of view) info on tyres. The following was taken from the Breaking in your tires article in the Additional tire tech articles section. Enjoy

Quote: Originally Posted by tireract.com

Due to these different components, your new tires require a "break-in" period to ensure that they deliver their normal ride quality and maximum performance. As tires are cured, a "release lubricant" is applied to prevent them from sticking in their mold. Some of the lubricant stays on the surface of your tires, reducing traction until it is worn away. Five hundred miles ( ) of easy acceleration, cornering and braking will allow the mold release lubricant to wear off, allowing the other tire components to begin working together. It is also important to note that your old tires probably had very little tread depth remaining when you felt it was time to replace them. As any autocrosser or racer who has tread rubber shaved off of his tires will tell you "low tread depth tires respond quicker." Don't be surprised if your new tires are a little slower to respond (even if you use the exact same tire as before). Their new, full depth brings with it a little more tread squirm until they wear down.
