Race City 'Secret Street' - Calgary

It's back! They started up two weeks ago, and I went out this past Friday for the slalom. The course this year is longer, slower and much more technical, but a blast nevertheless . After getting 'lost' the first two runs (damn, there is a lot of cones out there!!) I finally figured it out, and with the invaluable help of my son from the passenger seat, progressively lowered my times each run. My best was 87 seconds, which I was happy given that the mean time was 90 and I started at 92, though the quickest of the evening was 82. The guy was like liquid through the cones though I didn't note what he was driving other than it was Japanese.
There was a variety of cars out there including two Neons...oops, SRT 4's, and a Trans-Am of eighties vintage. If you want to see slow through the slalom you should have seen that T/A - his back-end hadn't finished coming through the one cone before his front-end was entering the next.
For $25, it is an evening of entertainment that can't be beat, and I strongly encourage other MINI drivers to come out and see what your car can really do - to boot, it gives you something to gauge your progress when there are other MINI's out and making time.
It can be a little intimidating if you haven't done it before, but you get over it quickly, and everyone down there seems to be helpful and encouraging. See you on Friday!!

They start the tech inspections at 6.30pm, I believe, and yes, you need a helmet. They do rent them for $5, though I picked one up at Canadian Tire for $70 last year (who knows what heads the rentals have been on!)

I've got 5 helmets. If anyone is heading down let me know and I'll show up with a few extras.

So is anyone going on Friday? It's probably going to be raining, but you never know ...

I can't spend the time (too many last minute details for Sunday left to do) and my "slicks" would never pass inspection anyway.

But I wouldn't mind taking an hour off and coming out to watch. 2 years ago I went out and raced half a dozen times (I did the 1/4 mile as well), but last year I just went out and watched a few times and still enjoyed it. Fun to see all the different types of cars.

So if anyone's going ...

Driving is Everything ... Anything else is just waiting around ...

Weather permitting - I'll be there.
I do not own my own helmet - so if there is an extra rolling around, all the better.
Cheers.

Same place the cars go - bear right at the entrance to Race City. I do believe it is $5 for spectators.

Thumbs up

Wow this sounds amazing. I hope the weather is good. I am going to try and make it. Anything special we need besides a helmet? My dirt bike helmet has a huge visor on it so it might look funny

Anyone ever spin out of control

I've seen some spin outs in the past, but there have been very few incidents.

Also if anyone is interested the Rocky Mountain Rally is also this weekend.

Though you can auto X in the rain the 'I can only go in a straight line' drag strip folks can't race, so they'll shut it all down.

Speaking of AutoX, anyone know when there might be a lapping day on the full track?

According to the weather forecast - which is generally unreliable in the town - tonight is suppost to be cloudy with a high of 4 degrees and a dew point of 3 degrees. If that's the case it may be doable but the chances of them shutting down the event early is a possibility. I just need to save a little extra rubber for the MINI Run on Sunday!
Cheers.

So looking outside, I'd guess we're hooped for tonight then?
