I was looking at the details of my car insurance and noticed I was not getting the same ‘Immobiliser Discount’ on my Mini Cooper S as I get on my Honda Pilot.

I called my insurance company, the Personal, and was disappointed to find out that the immobiliser in the MCS has not been certified by the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) … therefore no discount!

From the IBC website: "Vehicle (OEM) manufacturers may self-certify that their systems meet the Canadian Standard, and that they will comply with the performance testing, subject to audit by IBC."

So folks, you might want to check your insurance policy … I thought I was getting my expected discount until I dug into the details!

I’m also going to ask my dealer and Mini Canada if they have any date by which Mini Canada will have self-certified its immobiliser technology with the IBC … might be a good idea for others who are missing out on a discount to ask the same!

I think it is the same system as in the BMW 3/5 series. Are they on the list?

Edit: No Beemers on the list. But my Expy is!

Canadian Direct Insurance here in BC accepts the imobilizer and gives me a discount on our MC S. Might give them a call??
