| MINI2 Senior Derelict | What do you do for a living? A bunch of us got together a few weeks ago, 18 in total I believe, however I didn't feel like we got to know anyone. So as I start, and I know this type of thread has appeared before, what do you do for a living? I wanted to post it to this forum to limit it to us Canadians. Perhaps when we get this club idea off the ground we can put up our own message forum. Anyway's here's what I do: I'm an Principal IT consultant for TELUS. I specialize in systems architecture and network security; one of my main skills is architecting very secure and scalable web serving solutions, solutions designed for millions of request. In fact I've designed and built several of Toronto's largest Internet providers (before I was with Telus) mail and web serving networks. For the computer literate out there one of these network is serving ~1.8 terabytes of data/day! What about everyone else? I know we have a pilot or two around here. Paul |

| MINI2 Senior Derelict | I personally couldn't care how important you are and that's not why I find this interesting. Quite frankly doing what I do isn't very important at all, I'm not a doctor, I don't save lives. However some may find it interesting and start up a conversation. Mostly what I get here in Toronto is that "isnt's TELUS a cel phone company." ![]() I didn't start this to be a "Ra Ra ra" thread. I simply wanted to see what everyone does, I find it interesting. From there it usually develops into other areas of conversation. Sure, knowing what you do doesn't get me to know you but the follow up questions might. For example, as I mentioned in my post we have at least one if not two pilots around here I'd love to know what got them into flying and where that's taken them. That's called "getting to know someone" if you don't want to participate, that's fine. In only an handful of posts I see that we have several IT geeks. Could this be because of numbers or because we're more comfortable with this Internet thing? ![]() I see that obehave has access to rockets, this I find that interesting, a little scarry, but interesting nonetheless. Now, why an american is posting in a "Canada" forum I don't know. hehe. Do you like our beer that much obehave? ![]() Paul |

| MINI2 Master | I'm a software developer, writing interoperability tools. As for why everyone answers Canadian threads, I think most people just read via the "view new posts" button which mostly tosses the messages from different forums together. | MINI2 Master | Server too busy??? Argh, guess I can type it again. I write UNIX tools for Windows machines to help people use Windows machines like UNIX machines and to have UNIX and Windows machines work together more effectively. Sheesh, I should be in marketing... Harry MINI Cooper Cabrio: now the car with go cart handling really feels like an open go cart! | MINI2 Master | I like to have my cake and eat it too so I like to run UNIX utilities on Windows as I can then run software for scanners, etc., can run MS Office to open attachments from other people and yet I can still do things on a powerful command line. Not an uphill battle really -- there are a lot of people on Windows boxes who wish they weren't and our tools make it a little less painful for them. I used to be just a UNIX C programmer but then did a lot of C++ on Windows and now I'm mostly back to C. I use scripting too, along with porting, fixing and writing the scripting engines themselves. I created a language and wrote a compiler as part of my MSc project. I'm a UNIX guy at heart but my head knows where the rest of the world lives and works for the most part. | MINI2 Senior Derelict | And the rest of the world is greatful. hehe. ![]() You poor sole are those the only Canadian beers you can get? Yuu should drive up to Canada sometime and Harry and I will take you for a trip to some of the best micro breweries around with a stop at the Wolly in Guelph for a pint of their best cask conditioned ale. Damn, I'm getting thirsty. ![]() You see, we keep all the good beer to ourselves and don't export it. ![]() Paul |

| MINI2 Master | Canadian beer in the US is often like the vice versa (Molson and Labatt brew all the 'Budwieser' and 'Miller' we drink). Often it doesn't resemble the original. I remember some family members in Seattle WA bought me some Labatt Blue to make me feel at home but the green bottle, 3% alcohol and completely different taste had me laughing. The name was all that was in common! I bet the same is true of our Canadian brewed US names. Harry MINI Cooper Cabrio: now the car with go cart handling really feels like an open go cart! | MINI2 Senior Derelict | Ya we bump all out beers up to the mandatory 5%. ![]() My understanding is that they try and stay "true to the original" but make changes for local taste. In the case of Canadian brew in the US it get's watered down to taste like everything else. ![]() Paul |

| MINI2 Senior Derelict | Several of us got together here in Toronto a few weeks ago but as MINI lovers normally do we ended up driving more than talking. I thought it was a way to get to know some of the locals. I also know that a similar thread was started ages ago in the "General" forum and I think it got to be pretty huge so this was just my way of narrowing the field a little. However as it has been mentioned the "view new posts" button seems to be making the actual forum titles pointless, I love that button. ![]() However all that being said, everyone is welcome in Canada. ![]() Paul |

Aircanuck, what are you doing to keep your flight hours up? Taking any local planes out for spin? I make a great co-pilot "Hey watch out for that cow!" ![]() Paul |
