Question difference between cvt and normal automatic?

Hello,
I'm new in this forum. I've read the threads about the transmissions but I couldn't get clear about my question. I bought a 2004 Cooper with steptronic transmission. How do I understand if it's a CVT or normal automatic? What is the difference between them? I've read the data sheet, etc. posted in this forum but I'm not much of a technical person. Can you simply explain? I'll appreciate if you help me about this. Thanks.

Cooper is CVT. CVT is used on low power vehicles with low torque levels, hence why Cooper S has a proper automatic box. Arguably proper automatics are better in some ways, but I love CVT!

Hope this helps :-)
