Help, My '03 Mini is slipping in drive

Yesterday morning, my wife went to start the Mini and it would only click and buzz but no start. The lights came on but everything was not well. I went to Pep Boys today and bought the Bosch battery to fit it and installed it. I did have to slot the battery box slightly to get the negative cable to fit as the new battery was not quite as tall as the original. Everything went together fine and the car started instantly! Yay! I decided to tool around the block and backed out of the driveway just fine. Upon going into drive, the transmission would not pull the car at speed unless the throttle was mashed hard. It feels like it is slipping badly. It is also jerky as it takes up. If pressed hard, the car will accelerate, but in the neighborhood, I was afraid to see how fast I could get it going. There were no symptoms prior to the battery change, obviously, it is related. I just have no idea how to get it working again.

Early results from the dealer say that the tranny has lost its programming and will be reprogrammed, the mechanical systems check out okay so far. Programming will be done today and testing tommorrow. Dealer says they have only had one CVT unit go bad mechanically and this is a big dealer on the East Coast USA. All the scary CVT reports on the website seem to be at odds with this information. At least I will be less worried until the testing is finished tommorrow.

Final fix was to reprogram the tranny computer, the car shifts like new. Apparently the battery weakened and the low voltage messed up the trans DME coding and adaptations. As far as the dealer being untruthful, I have bought and had serviced three Jaguars from this dealer over the last 15 years and their record with me is excellent. As I put myself through school as a professional mechanic, I can usually tell when I am being whizzed. Why would anyone lie about track record to a guy that had a minor problem with a car out of warranty anyway? No percentage in it.

As too these CVT's not failing too often according to the dealer tech is far from truthful. I've been building transmissions for over 15 years and the CVT's in the Mini's are no different that their founding father, the Subaru Justy. ZF, the german company that built the CVT's for MINI opted to not sell any parts for these units. They are not hard to build if the parts are available. With some digging, I've came up with sources to buy most all parts to rebuild the units. Usually the belts brake or the ring and pinions chip teeth off.
