Offline | *sigh* maybe I AM stupid. I'm still confused as to the difference between Sport and Steptronic. Is Sport simply moving the shift to the right and leaving it there, whereas steptronic is moving it to the right then up and down using the gears? I'm a member of Mensa, you know. Really! Shows how useful that is... BRG/black top CVT with nav system named Winnie. I'm a GUY! Wave if you see me in the North Hills of Pittsburgh! |

Offline | Hi I'm new here but I most say that I personal hate the CVT I just to drive one and it never came above 5500 rpm while the engine has maximum power at 6200 rpm 0 to 100km/h takes ages and is not half as fast as the manual and at highways acceleration sucks wether you use D, SD or steptronic. It just hit the rev limiter (at 5500 rpm!)and it does not go any faster then 170 km/h (MINI One) The manual One I drove went 120km/h in second gear with almost 7000 rpm and believe me I tried everything that is above spoekn of I'm not here to offend eny one but this my personal opinion (must say it is a very relaxed drive though, espacially in city's) |

Offline | Well I,ve driven the Cooper CVT also and although it is vaster an manual transimsion Cooper would defintly kick CVT,s ass as it can got true the hole rev range and dere for get maximum power especially on the highways en short corners becuese the CVT "thinks" a will when you push the trottle to the floor. |

Offline | Re: Hmmmmmmmmmm Yeah, that's what I was wondering as well. I haven't driven a manual Cooper, but I've found the CVT to have quite a bit of zip to it in steptronic mode. I threw mine in 4th the other day going up a hill and red lined it. I went from about 70 to 90 very, very quickly. |

Offline | Does anyone know how much quickness is lost (if any) between the CVT and the manual? I know Audi claims their Multitronic CVT is as quick as their manual, but I wasn't sure if this applied to the Mini's CVT as well. |

| MINI2 Regular | You poor, poor, dear. Let redbackfur explain it all to you. D Mode (Normal) Your transmission adjusts in a stepless fashion as you drive. There are not fixed points where it will shift to other gears, such as with a regular Automatic Transmission. Sport Mode This is where you ONLY push the shifter to the right. You will see SD in your Odometer Display. (We both have the CVT & NAV systems) Now the car will start out, and the ratio of engine and transmission will have 6 specific points. You will hear the car sort of shift between each gear. You will also feel more engine breaking as you take your foot off the gas. The transmission is still automatically changing ratios as you drive, but rather than a smooth transition, there are fixed jumps. This is nice when you are in stop & go traffic, or driving on winding roads in the mountains, as you will spend less time on the brakes. M+S Steptronic mode Once you push the Shift Lever forward or reverse a bit while you are in sport mode you will see the letter below your odometer go from SD to a number 1-6. These are FIXED Gear ratios, such as if you were driving a manual transmission car. If you click the shifter forward a bit, you will downshift. If you click it back toward yourself, you will upshift. Just like shifting a manual transmission, minus the CLUTCH Pedal! However, the Mini will prevent itself from over revving the engine, when in M+S Steptronic mode by forcing a gear change if the RPM gets too high. The little car wants to prevent self destruction. If you want to go back to Sport mode once you have entered M+S Steptronic you must click your shift lever back to D and then click it back in to Sport Mode again. I hope this helped! 2002 Cooper . My CVT Transmission Self-destructed at 89,500 miles |

Offline | Jerky CVT I was driving a friends MINI One last night and the CVT seemed rather "jerky". On acceleration the car seemed to "hesitate" a couple of times, almost like there was no fuel going to the engine. And at low, crawl speeds when you take your foot of the accelerator there would be a sudden jerk... like if you were to release the clutch quickly on a manual car when you shift down. Is this normal ? AOH... Sept'02 Chilli Red Cooper |

Offline | Re: Jerky CVT Generally I would say no. However, it does seem that CVT's are a bit quirky. If you look through various CVT posts scattered throughout MINI2 there seems to a fair number of stories about "jerkiness" or surging, etc, etc, but a lot of them seem to be unique to each car. Mine for example gets a mild yo/yo surging feeling at almost exactly 10mph, but doesn't have the problems you describe. |

| DRIVER | its all about driving style!!! the CVT and throttle by wire accelerator provide a different driving situation than most other cars. When I first started driving my CVT, the drive was jerky as hell, but now that I have gotten used to its mannerisms, I can drive pretty smooth. I am very easy on and off the gas a slow speeds, when I accelerate, I just put my foot down and let the tranny do its work, of if using the steptronic mode, I will shift 500-750 rpms before the point of where I would want to shift. Just keep on playin with it!!! I drove a Honda Civic last night. I LOVE MY MINI!!! It is so much fun to drive compared to that Honda! |

Offline | That's odd... in my CVT it definitely seems to have distinct shift points even in "normal" drive mode. Which makes no sense to me, being a CVT and all. But I get the classic automatic-transmission shift-clunk effect, along with the telltale RPM changes on the tach... |

Offline | This may be true for some of the issues mentioned here, mine normally drives very smoothly as well. Sometimes however traffic dictates 10 mph and mine will surge no matter how gently I increase or reduce my speed to that level. |

| Living in Mini Wasteland | While I don't have shift points in Normal driving mode, I also don't have the shift points in the Sport driving mode either. I have wondered if my car is different and I think that I need to take a test drive in another CVT to see if it is different or not. P.S. Mine was an April 02 build. Sold the Cooper. Now driving the Traveller. I mean Clubman. |

Offline | Re: Jerky CVT I have been driving a CVT ONE while my Cooper was in the dealers last week. I had it for 2 days. I found the same as you aoh. I thought the CVT on the whole was quite good, but I definitely prefer the manual gearbox (that is when they stay together!!!) ![]() |

| DRIVER | Well, I went to the drag strip earlier tonite....take a look at my times: Run 1: Reaction: 1.261 60ft: 2.894 330ft: 7.871 ET@ 594 ft: 11.146 1/8 ET: 11.868 1/8 MPH: 62.34 Run 2: Reaction: 1.341 60ft: 2.909 330ft: 7.687 ET@ 594 ft: 10.879 1/8 ET: 11.586 1/8 MPH: 63.65 Run 3: Reaction: 1.004 60ft: 2.806 330ft: 7.628 ET@ 594 ft: 10.870 1/8 ET: 11.593 1/8 MPH: 62.25 Run 4: Reaction: 1.257 60ft: 2.896 330ft: 7.764 ET@ 594 ft: 10.999 1/8 ET: 11.714 1/8 MPH: 62.93 Run 5: Reaction: 1.329 60ft: 2.791 330ft: 8.314 ET@ 594 ft: 11.888 1/8 ET: 12.654 1/8 MPH: 58.67 Run 6: Reaction: 1.124 60ft: 2.816 330ft: 7.629 ET@ 594 ft: 10.850 1/8 ET: 11.565 1/8 MPH: 62.86 ....needless to say, I'm a little rusty on the reaction time (that, and the CVT is a slow responder) too bad the local track is an 1/8th MI. |
