Scotland Gear box prob in automatic m.cooper

Can anyone help with my never ending problem... I bought my mini cooper (Auto) in Aug 2005, reg 02.
One year later gearbox went which they replaced. Exactly one year later again the gearbox went and was replaced.
Last 3 weeks I have been hearing a whirring noise when in a low gear, took it to a local garage who said it is definately not a bearing , they cant find anything wrong but did say it sounds as though it is the GEARBOX again !!! What can I do as I no longer have warrenty with min . My mini seems to need a new gearbox every year.
