Offline | Using CVT on Uphill/Downhill: Which mode to use?? I am planning to drive my CVT Cooper to Eureka Spring in Arkansas hills. Lots of twist & turn on a hills. May I know if I should use the regular "D" or use the Steptronic? I am now reading the manual but it's not specific. Thanks in advance for any input. |

Offline | You should be able to use all 3 available programming modes in your CVT (Normal, Sport and Steptronic). Depending on terrain and driving style you should be able to use any of these modes and expect good performance. If you are in the mood to "Play" I highly recommend using Steptronic mode to juice out a bit more power out of the engine. In case you haven't noticed yet, when selecting either Sport or Steptronic modes, the CVT programming keeps your engine RPMs higher (Around 3K to 4K at the very minimum) to give you better midrange and upper band power but also at decreased fuel economy. The Normal programming keeps the revs down to improve fuel mileage. You can switch between any of these modes on the fly, so don't be afraid to play with it and see which mode suits your situation better. For long straight away strectches of road I recommend Sport Mode and for twisties and hills I recommend Steptronic mode. Have you ever driven a stick shift car before? (Just to see if you understand the operation of the Steptronic). Have fun! ![]() '02 MINI Cooper CVT On Order: 2004 MCS (Est production date: 9/5/03) |

Offline | Thanks for your good detailed input. You made me more excited to drive this CVT despite of the frequent compalint on the board of lurching, stalling, etc. Yes, I do drive a stick before---but I was vetoed by my wife who wants a automatic so that she can drive it too! Thanks. ![]() |

Offline | I like to use the sport mode or steptronic mode on hills. In sport mode, I also have noticed more dynamic braking. Changing modes on the fly works great! Once you get the feel for it, you can drop in to steptronic mode from CVT and downshift for passing, then slip back in to CVT to cruise along again. ![]() MC/VR/B/PP&SP/CVT/Xenon |
