sprucin up a cooper w CVT

hi,

just would like to ask are there any limitations if i were to upgrade the performance of a cooper w CVT.

also what kind of mods would be advisable bearin in mind the CVT's torque convertor being less superior to a manual.

cheers

New Intake or Filter (K&N, Monster, Pipercross / Viper, Rouge)
New Exaust (Monster, Supersprint, Rouge)

Lighter Wheels (stock wheels R83's are 20.1lb per wheel, Monza 16X6.5 are 14.25lbs)

If running with runflats you can remove the spare tire from under the boot, this will save you 30lb or more with the mounting hardware.

From what I have heard chiping the car does not produce good results on the CVT, very little if any increase.

If money is no object, import the JCW Cooper Kit from the UK, it fits on the CVT's and the 5-Speeds, this kit will take you from 115 to 140 and includes all the mods above in once package from the father of MINI tweaks. If you where in the UK you could get the kit and it would even be covered under warranty. MINIUSA has decided to only bring the kit over for the S at the moment.

Technomage, do you have the above listed mods in your Cooper CVT?

have you had any low end performance improvements or have these been pretty marginal?

Yeah I know, it is a bummer that MINIUSA has decided not to bring over the JCW package for the regular Cooper. However, I have read about very mixed reviews on the actual performance improvements over stock with the JCW package.

Don't really want to wait 4 years until the warranty expires to tweak it a little more.

Have you heard about any mods for the CVT currently in development by Diamond Racing?

PS: By the way, how's you car doing? Did it get finally fixed?

I have the pipercross on my cvt, it does help low end performance a little.

Diamond racing is creating a new exhaust (for standard and cvt) that is going to cost about $375 i think, and it should give good performance numbers too.

I think the chip may actually screw up the cvt, only going off a conversation i had with another cvt owner though .

And although it is sad that they dropped the JCW for the Cooper, i still think it is for a reason. Possibly another company with a better cooper performance package . The Dinan MINI rumors began resurging at my friend's BMW dealer, maybe that is a sign( i hope so )

I wrote the exact number in the major CVT thread, but i think the cvt is limited around like 150-165 torque.

There is sense in the approach you guys are taking. The more I read about wheels and tires, the more this component becomes a VERY important consideration. Lighter rotational mass spins up faster with whatever power is available, and stops quicker with available brakes. Conversation and the testing points me to the 16x6.5" Monza you recommend. Wheels and tires may have the biggest percentage effect?

From new materials I've just seen, the CVT is speced to165Nm or 175Nm Torque (this is being reconfirmed, but we think it is really 165Nm) and 6000rpm shaft input (which creates the 6,000rpm computer redline in the CVT).

Weird personal story about wheel weight...

I hadnt finished my break-in until winter when i had my snow tires on, so i had no idea how fast the car fealt with my heavy runflats. My snow tires were the MINI steels and some normal snow tires. I figured the steels+normal tires would be much less heavy. So after reading all of the posts claiming that the runflat were the reason for slow starts, i began worrying about putting them back on. I feared that they would really slow down my car. But to my surprise, when i put them on this weekend, i didnt notice any change in acceleration.

Is it that the steels arent as light as i think? I never officially weighed them so i dont really know the exact weight. I went from the 15 inch steels and conti-winter tires to the 16 inch 5 stars with dunlop performance runflats. Maybe its the grip factor that makes up for the weight issues.

I think the wheel swap is deffinitely the easiest way to cure any acceleration problems, and they make your car look good as well . Only problem is they can get a little pricey for the lighttweiht wheels.
