CVT question. (I'm new in here)

Hi all,

I'm new in here and just got my Mini two days ago. REALLY LOVE IT

I just wonder what is the different between "D" and "SD"? I feel "SD" is more powerful and it will keep the engine at around 3000rpm. Could anyone tell me the differences? Thanks.

I can't give you a technical explanation, but essentially you're correct. SD delivers more power. I use Drive most of the time and regard it as essentially an economy feature. I switch over to SD for hills, passing, on-ramps, etc. SD also allows you to shift between simulated gears by tapping the gear shift fowards to downshift and backwards to go up a gear (sorry if you already knew that).

Hi Sejanus, do you mean I can switch between "D" and "SD" when the car is moving? How about "SD" -> "+/-" -> "D" ? If the car is going 60mph in SD and I do a shiftup, will the screen show "6"? Sorry for asking so many questions. I just want to make sure I won't damage the gear box. thanks

Yes, you can switch between any of the modes while moving or at a stop. The entire trans is computer controlled, and is programmed to not do anything that would damage it, so no worry about doing something "wrong" and damaging it.(Note: I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to do it though, I don't think you want to be the one to find the bug in the software that somehow allows the trans to attempt to shift into reverse at 65mph or something!) The "Steptronic" mode (i.e. the mode with simulated gears that you change by moving the shifter) does have 6 speeds, but I haven't played with it much, so other than that I can't say much about how it works.

Well, a read of the owner's manual would be a good idea .

The CVT has three modes:

Normal CVT mode (D)

Sport Mode (SD)

And Steptronic (Shifter to the right and toward the dash to downshift, towards the back to up shift, the starting point for this is the SD mode, it changes to manual mode when you shift.)

First of all, you should avoid Sport Mode during the run-in (break-in) period as you may over-rev the 4500 RPM limit.

After the run-in period, yes indeed, you can shift between modes while driving. I have often shifted from normal mode to SD, then downshifted to pull out and overtake a car, then shifted back to normal mode to cruise. I am very pleased with the CVT, although I need the CD33 fix to prevent the surge at a stop.

The SD mode, as you noticed, generally rev's a little higher, and also seems to have more dynamic braking (using the engine to slow the car). It is quite good for the twisties or maneuvering in traffic.

The CVT also uses an adaptive technology so the car "learns" your driving preferences; All in all, a nice little device.

Oh, and Welcome to MINI2.

totally agreed! steptronic is very addictive, you'll see! i love it!
you guys neglected to tell about kick downs....
if you press the pedal to the ground in steptronic mode, the car will auto downshift to deliver max power! be prepared to shift when you hit red though!!!! it's too fun! make sure you wait til' the car is broken in!!!

You know that's a good point I've been meaning to ask folks about. I've only done it once or twice and haven't really played around with it yet. What happens if you do it in Drive or SD? I assume it automatically downshifts.
