i only have a little over 4000 miles on mine but it seems to be getting better with age. i had it stall twice in the first couple weeks i got the car from the dealer when coming to a full stop.. and was quite perplexed. then i noticed a strange lurch once or twice in the next few weeks. but after 4000 miles or so the only thing i feel is the yo - yo effect at 8 to 10 mph, which i actually think is fun !? the car seems to have adapted well to my driving style and i have no complaints about the CVT! you just have to get over that break in period.

CVT problems

We have a 9/02 build Cooper w/ CVT. It now has around 9k miles on it (just got back from the 9k service). I don't know what software version number we have (how do I find out? --or do they have to tell me?), but we've had the software updated every single time we've brought it into the shop -- which is at least 4 times now in the life of this car. We've also had other trouble -- e.g. steering wheel pump replaced, and of course the recall for transmission fluid. The CVT, though, is insanely irritating. The "rubber-banding" effect at 8-10 mph is very frustrating for someone who commutes 45 minutes to & from work in traffic moving at .... you guessed it ... 8-10 mph. Besides that annoyance, the car has stalled an uncountable number of times -- after every software upgrade. Stalls at traffic lights, while driving at low speeds, etc. It's insanely annoying, and they haven't been able to fix it in the last 3 attempts. We don't drive it much (largely due to the unreliable / scary feeling of the frequent stalling) so there's an outside chance that the latest software udpate solved that problem; the car feels the same, though -- rubber-banding, hopping, etc -- so I'd be surprised if it didn't stall next time we drive it for more than 30 minutes.

CVT = Bad idea. Too bad the driving sucks, because otherwise it's a fun car

hlellelid, sounds like its time to call it a lemon. The stalling you are experiencing sounds pretty severe and atypical. My CVT has never once stalled. The problem may well be a transmission problem (though I wonder if it isn't something else since the reprogamming doesn't seem to be helping), but it isn't a CVT problem in the sense that the CVT's have been particularly prone to it.

9000 miles since then (now 7th July).

My commute is 60 miles each way, bulk is on motorway and the 15 miles is town/heavy traffic.

Car has been faultless. No issues with idle, stalling, or pogo type behaviour.

No idea what version software is; don't know how to check...

hlellelid, In a conversation about gas (octane, quality, availability) with members of another list (Audi), the consensus there is that running the correct fuel is critically important in modern cars (even though the car's electronics will adjust for lower octane), and enhancing it with additives like toluene (some call this mix "rocket fuel") does in fact produce much better performance.

So just a simple confirming question: you've been using unleaded premium 92, right? Have you tried any other brands to see if factors like fuel may affect your stalling?

cooper4us, We are still running strong after the 10K service and 33.2 software install in early June. I've had several track days too.

This CVT is a very sophisticated drivetrain that's now working very well for us. No stalls, no jerking, no rough shifts to D from R. The dyno experience early this week showed how tightly software is managing the tranny and engine, and how consistent it is, which should turn out to be a defining characteristic of the CVT configuration (think bracket racing wins).

So, what is the latest update on high mileage CVTs? Who has driven the CVT the furthest without problems? I am really curious about the logevity of the EcoTronic CVT.

cooper_sport, please post the results regarding your visit to the dealer. I am attempting to get a read on whether the CVT will last at least 100,000 miles or, whether I should just wait until January, 2005 and order an S with automatic transmission option.

Just broke 48,000 and the CVT tranny is just fine, thank you.

The real test will be in 200 more miles when the warranty is up.

I like the 48,000 mile number. Anyone else with a higher number? Yes, the real test will be when the warranty is up. Have you considered an extended warranty?

I just hit 75,000 miles and still not problems with the CVT. Overall, my MINI is quite the workhorse for my high mileage driving.
