United-States Idle Speed for MINI Cooper with CVT

Wife just took delivery of a Velvet Red beauty. First English car owned since my 1961 Sunbeam Alpine. Anyway, the idle seems quite high at 1,000 -1,100 rpm. Is this normal as I can't find the specs anywhere.

Thanks

Peter

Yes it is completely normal. The new engine management controlling software programming (Very likely version 32.2 since you have a brand new build)keeps the RPM's high (Around 1K to 1,100 RPM) to ensure smooth idle quality with or without the A/C on and to prevent sudden engine stalls or near stalls.

Older version of the software code kept the idle at or below 1,000 RPM and this often caused rough idle, vibrations and frequent engine stalls.

If you are used to a big Detroit V6 or V8 engine or a larger displacement engine, remember that the MINI is a 1.6L powerplant that needs to keep its RPM's a bit higher than the norm to ensure seamless operation.

Congrats on your Velvet Red Cooper CVT. Do you have any pics to share? What are the specs on yoru car?

Yup. Normal.

I just missed owning an Alpine, with the hard top and a new ragtop. Disagreement with my mother over a 16 year old having such a car. That was in the Early 70's.

Good color choice for your Cooper.

Thanks for the quick info. I'll send along a pic when I get one.
