| UberGeek | Although overall performance is very simliar to pre-chip. The whole ECU thing (on a Cooper) provides very little bang for the buck. For the 8-10bhp claimed, I could probably get the same effect by losing some weight from the interior. ![]() There are so many factors when it comes to tuning that it's impossible to say 'this is the best way'. I'd like to try an chip change, but I find it very expensive for what it is. My Supra's fairly well modified, and still runs the standard ECU code. I guess it all depends on how desparate me/you/anyone is/are to find that extra bit of power. I'm not too fussed regarding the MINI, after all, if I want big BHP, I'll drive something other than the MINI. Am I rambling...? [It's late.. ]Lee |

Offline | I agree that the 8bhp increase from Superchips on a Mini Cooper is very expensive for what you actually get. My car is a Mini One CVT & both Superchips & the Oneclick offer an increase of approx 45bhp on the basic One 90bhp, up to 135bhp is what I was advised by Coolnew who supplied the Oneclick. At £399 for 45bhp, this equates to a much more reasonable £9 per bhp. I have no reason to suspect that the quoted bhp claims are suspect, the car certainly feels that it has a huge increase in power, & loves the 3500-6000 rev band. If you have not seen them there are a couple of sample graphs on the minispares website www.minispares.com for the Oneclick on a Cooper S & a One, (they claim 138.6bhp for the One!) |

| Back... | I just put in a BMP intake in my car today. Not too bad gives a bit more pick up. Got a nice sound too when I hit the gas. Can't wait to put in the Borla exhaust when I get some scratch after working overtime around xmas. Will keep you all informed how well it works. Winslow ![]() This space for Rent |

Offline | I agree, Nonseq. - a more efficient "pump" will be better off with the same fuel input. I suspect that what the Powerchip (or any other?) does, based on the info on thier website, is configure the ECU map more efficiently for a higher octane fuel, among other things. Here in TX, super is 93 octane, some other places (CA for example) get 91. I am going out on a limb here, but I'd guess that MINI/BMW mapped the ECU to run optimally with 91, but still driveable with lower octanes. It is conceiveable that the remap targets the 93 octane (as maybe evidenced by the tuning selection criteria), making the engine run quite a bit rougher (weaker) with lower octanes - something the "Normal Joe" wouldn't necessarily be happy with. Just a thought - I am looking to get more umph, but am still not convinced with the intake/exhaust nor the remap route either. Derek Derek |

Offline | and another idea.. Been thinking about this kinda thing: water injection as mentioned in this thread- MINI2 Thread I have some experience with a water injection setup on a Hemi (yes, the real deal) in an RV that drastically reduced pinging (i.e. re-couping lost power under load) and was very pleased with its performance. Again, I might be out on a limb here, but if the ECU is compensating for pinging under high load + hot conditions by retarding the timing, among other things, anything that reduces pinging would allow to ECU keep away from the pinging-reducing-power-sapping part of the map. I know that water injection works well for the turbo & supercharged crowd, hows about us normally aspirated folks? Anybody else do/see/care to comment about something like this? Derek and also looking for that 35hp... Derek |

| DRIVER | water injection is good if you have the need and support with other aftermarket bits from what I understand. what water injection does is lower the piston temperature and increase compression. cold air is more dense than hot air, therefore there is more oxygen available. I would presume that more fuel would be helpful, and since we have a throttle by wire technology, the computer may adjust for the increased amount of oxygen. This not technically learned knowledge, but the learned through ramblings about cars while working in friends' garages....so I may be wrong. |

Offline | OK...Here is a complete list of the entire modifications that have been completed to date on the primeMINIster: The formal list of the performance mods are as follows: BMP Instake Madness Big-Bore Throttle Body SuperSprint Exhaust Powerchip ECU H-Sport Springs Alta Rear Sway Bar H-Sport Control Arms 17" Wheels and Yokohama ES100s Schrick Stage 1 Camshaft Milltek Stainless Header Cooper S Valves Ported/Polished Cylinder Head The list of the interior mods are as follows: Union Jack Flag Sunroof Decal by Cooper Flags Bonnet Stripes Rally Lights Tinted Windows Euro Shelf Console Organizer Finally, the most important mod: thePassport SR7 with Laser Shifters Now the real questions is: "How well is the CVT handling all this hp"? The answer is just fine with no problems. If I had to guess we are pushing 160 to 165 hp on the Cooper (stock 115hp)! We will be installing a temp gauge to moniter the CVT. It has been a wild ride. --Robert |
