Offline | CVT owners Can someone tell me whether CVT is powerful enough? I live on HK island and will frequently drive up Magazine Gap Road, Blue Pond Road and Stubbs Road. Any input would be much appreciated. Also, is there any way to upgrade a CVT to make it more powerful? |

Offline | Hi acc, I usually drive my CVT up on the Old Peak Road to Dynasty Court. I would say that my driving style is gentle and the Mini is powerful enough if there is only me in the car, but where there is somebody sitting right next to me, the power will become fair. Of course, it is only equipped with a 1.6l engine. Don't expect too much. |

| UberGeek |
Depends what you mean by 'enough'. My 03 MC/CVT is fine for mixing it up in the twisties and cruises at 100mph on the freeway all day. Sure, it's not a 400BHP supercar, but what power it's got is very useful. Have you taken a test drive (if possible)? Not that I' aware of, other than the standard sorts of things, ie filter, exhaust, plugs wires etc. Of course, changing these puts your warranty and TLC at risk/. Lee |

Offline | Thanks for the input Lee, ar75. I'm very close to ordering one. Yes I took a test drive yesterday and found it ok. It's just hearing a lot of negative comments like "it can't go up the peak with more than 2 people" that created the doubts in me. I think it's a wonderful car. Another thing, I hear the velvet red colour has been discontinued in the UK - is that true? I thought it would look quite good with white top and stripes. Plus, it's more unusual. What do you guys think of that colour? |

Offline | acc, You re most welcom. Just bear in mind that it's a 1,600cc engine. This will make you feel better. For modifications, I just put on a new antenna and some roof decals, but I'm sure that lots of forum members here will be happy to share their experience with you. Keep an eye on this forum and join our forthcoming meeting. You will enjoy it. For colour celection, velvet red is absolutely fine. It delivers a nostalgic touch and yet it is rare in Hong Kong. If you pick this color, our group photo will be more colorful. Hope to see you soon in our meeting. |

Offline | ar75, unfortunately my MC will not arrive until December. Will definitely join the meetings then. Do you have any good recommendations for people who can install bonnet stripes and graphics for me? I'm thinking of ordering from a place in the US called CooperFlags. I just need someone in HK to stick them onto my MC. |

Offline | I think GP Dream (or GT something) in TamKung Road, To Kwa Wan is the leader in the industry. They can customise your personal decals. Howevr, I did mine by chance in Yuen Long when I had "B仔凉粉". The craftsmanship is OK and the charge is much chepaer. |

Offline | ar75, great i will do that, thanks. What options would you recommend me taking? I'm thinking of leather seats, sunroof (although somehow i would like to maintain the all-white look... the graphics shop in US says they can send me some film to put on it), front lamps. What else should I add ? |

Offline | Sunroof and Graphic for sure, I know coolnew.com have some sunroof garphic that is cool. Front lamps is also good, but don't install by BMWHK, cause they will link it up to high beam. Air filter, spark plug wire and spark plug for sure again, It really improve the driving fun. |

Offline | sorry to ask a separate question but do the front lamps in hk have the extra switch so that can turn them on and off without using high beam? and yes CVT is powerful enough to go up the road like magazine gap rd, blue pond rd and stubbs rd...even though i live in melbourne, australia i know of these roads as i live on stubbs rd when i am in hk...and i'm pretty sure CVT is powerful enough because i have gone up similar roads here in australia without too much effort...but of course, with more people is more weight and is slower...but car should not strain too much la Last edited by wils : Sep 9th, 2003 at 10:59 PM. |

Offline | The CVT's power is fine. I've taken mine up some of the steepest hills San Francisco has to offer with four people in the car without any problems. In the mountains I've taken it up to 7-8,000+ feet several times at freeway speeds and also on twisties again without any problems. Nor have I ever had any trouble keeping up with standard Coopers or even MCS' on mountain roads. If you ever feel like it doesn't have as much power as you'd like, you simply switch it over to Sports Mode and take off. Sure it's no V-8, but then no MINI is. |

Offline | Whenever you want to have fun and prentend to be a pocket rocket, SD mode is applicable. I always use SD mode instead of kickdown when I overtake road blockers. I feel the response is faster and easier to handle than flooring the gas. |

Offline | I would think that majority of the time CVT would be either in D or SD mode. And for the twistes you will be using steptronic. If you use steptronic all the time might as well buy a manual. ![]() |
