Exclamation CVT Transmission noise

Just got my mini back from the dealership that they replaced the CVT transmission. Two weeks ago, I heard some weired rotational noise came from my car and the sound was really annoying. The noise was getting louder while the rmp was higher. First, I thought that it was from the engine but after I drove it to the dealership for the inspection and they figure out that the noise was from the CVT transmission. Since my car is under warranty (only 7 month-old), they went ahead to replace the transmission with no charge. Now, they would send back the broken transmission part to the miniusa for further the inspection and research. I am wondering that how many of mini CVT owners have the same problem!?

What is the build date and mileage of your Cooper CVT?

'02 Cooper CVT, 14K+ miles and no transmission related problems at all.

My car is an early August 2002 build (It was not affected by the infamous CVT recall that covered most early build 2003 Cooper CVTs build between September and October 2002).

Was your car part of that "wrong CVT oil" recall, by any chance?

Unhappy

I seem to have the same problem as you have stated. Actually I've been hearing a kind of rotational, rolling sound from the exhaust area that varies with car speed (not rpm), and recently I noticed the sound is accompanied by a kind of metal rubbing noise from under the car. Interesting enough the sound is not noticeable every morning when I drive to work until about 10 minutes on the highway. After the engine heats up it is often noticable, but sometimes the noise is small.

I have scheduled an appointment with the dealer next week. I'll print this article out to them and hope that they can diagnose the problem.

I have a August 2002 build (CVT). Haven't received any recall from MINI.

Mine was Jan 2003 production and I put almost 9000 miles in 7 months.
The noise could be heard during driving from 1 mph to 85 mph. (I usually don't drive above 85mph.) The noise was off when the engine was idle (0 mph).

I just sent my CVT cooper in for a service and found out I need a new transmission too!

I was having some minor issues, car stuttering at low speeds, a couple of random stalls etc, but figured it probably just needed the latest software update. Then on the way to the dealer the engine started sticking - first at 1,600 rpm and then at 2,000 rpm. The only way I could push above this was to switch to manual shifting (even the sport mode wasn't helping).

So to cut a long story short, out goes the old transmission and in goes a new one. But this has me concerned - is there an issue with the CVT generally that I should be wary of in the future??

(2003 build Mini, delivered in August, 8500km on the clock, no crazy driving!)

Ours had been "bulletproof". We're now at 17mo and 14600mi.

I've got a Mar 03 MC. I have a noise that increases with RPM, particularly 4000-6000rpm.

To me, it sounds like it's coming from the steering column, but after having the column, rack and PAS pump replaced, it's still there.

I wonder if it's my CVT?

Car's going into on Wednesday (again, 9th time) for that and to have other work that they did on Friday straightened out.

Ours is a 2/14/03 build CVT. We have had the lurching while stopped in traffic, but otherwise no discernable trouble I would say was related to the CVT. We now have 9,800 miles on it.

Mine was doing something simular, but I was dropping gears. Like if I was in Manual mode I would be driving in 6, the engine would get loud and then drop to 5th or even 4th.
If I was in drive or sport drive modes it would get loud, shudder and then buck bad.

Took it too the dealer and they found a hole in the top of the CVT where fluid would be leaked out. It would only leak when running as the presure was there to force the fluid out. So they dropped the transmission and put in a new one for me. No problem since. That was at 17K I am now at 30K. No more problems since. My car is a late '02 build (but a '03 Model).

Have those owners who are experiencing problems made ANY modifications to increase power/torque from the motor? And, what software version are you running?

There must be a baseline to draw reasonable conclusions.
