CVT Performance

Hello All,

Can those of you with the CVT transmission give me your feedback as to the crispness of the shifting. When you shift is there a noticible lag?

Thanks,

scot

Scot,

There's a whole forum dedicated to the CVT, I recommend you check it out at http://www.mini2.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=624 (don't know if I did the link right, but you can find it off the main forums page)
The CVT doesn't shift per se, it just steadily increases speed. It really has a lot of personalities, a simple one in D mode, a sportier one in SD, and then the variety of the Steptronic mode. They're all fun, and you can read all about them in the CVT forum, where a lot of owners have done a lot of terrific research.

Good luck!
Jim

Scott, you appear to have a Cooper S in your profiles? What has been your reaction to the CVT?

'02 MINI Cooper CVT (prod. date: 6/12/2002; Indi Blue/Black roof, R-81 7-hole 15x5.5" or NZO 16x6.5")
'67 Austin Cooper S 1275 Mk1 (build date: 6/26/1967; Tartan Red/Black Roof, Minilite 10x4.5" or 10x6.0")

Nonsequitur,

I plan to purchase a Mini Cooper in the future. But I'm torn between the horsepower of the Cooper S and the CVT shifting offered with the Cooper base.

My primary use for the car is daily commuting (with a smile on my face). My morning commute is most often stop-and-go, while my evening commute is 50% stop-and-go, 50% not.

Ideally, i want the best of both worlds - power with an auto-tranny that allows me to click shift.

So i'm asking about the CVT to get a feel for it's functionality.

Scott,

Your daily travels sound like mine, and I find the CVT to be terrific and lots of fun. I can leave it in D and just do the mindless commute (and get better mileage), or flick it into SD for a more aggressive drive. Or, if I want to have more fun and be more involved, I can do the manual shifting. Any way you choose, it's great to have choices! I'm really happy with the CVT.

Jim

Spend some time in the CVT Forum as shputz suggested. You'll see lots of comment there, some teasing, and a respected amount of honest research on What this car offers and How to drive it. We find ours to be everything "MINI" promised -- and more.
