Offline | CVT history in racing Here's an interesting website on the development history of Continuously Variable Transmissions in racing, which has a direct relationship to the ZF ecoTronic VT1F CVT we have in the MINI. Our car uses a 24mm wide "Van Doorne" steel push belt, and the principles developed by Hub and Wim van Doorne's company Van Doorne's Transmissie (VDT) and later Van Doorne's Automobiel Fabriek (DAF). The new BMW Group MINI CVT is mentioned in Part 2: The rise and fall of alternative power in motor racing Swoosh and screech! Offline | Or some other carefully chosen words ... like "similar concept". The ZF gearbox we have uses one steel belt (versus two of rubber) that pushes torque (versus pulls) in a very much smaller device that weighs only 52lb (versus how much heavier?). Ours is probably closer to the F1 gearbox that David Coulthard drove in the Williams FW15C. ![]() Separate subject related to this thread: I proposed the car names "Daffodil" or "Marathon" over on another thread as ideas for a bold CVT owner to use for their car. The thread of history back to CVT-equipped DAF cars in the '60s might be fun for someone here. http://www.mini2.com/forum/showpost....&postcount=120 '02 MINI Cooper CVT(6/12/02; Indi Blue/Black, R-81 7-hole 15x5.5" or NZO 16x6.5") '67 Austin Cooper S (6/26/67; Tartan Red/Black, 10x4.5") Last edited by nonsequitur : Dec 31st, 2003 at 04:32 PM. |
