22K miles...CVT tranny blown....

Well my CVT tranny crapped out at 22K miles today. Gunna have to replace tranny. Thank god this car is already being lemoned for a new one. Still, kinda scary though that this happened at 22K. The good news is...my rental is a JAGUAR X TYPE! Its SOO fast. Love it.

Lucky you! My CVT will hit 22k in a week. Hope that it will work well because there is no lemon law here in Hong Kong.

You made it about 5K more than I did when my first CVT went. I had to replace mine at 17K. Good luck with the new Mini.

Question: What were the symptoms? What exactly failed? Did it act up before it blew, or did it fail suddenly?

TIA,
Ditch

Yup it would buck in D or SD, and the RPM's would be all over. (Usually reving high though) In Manual mode I would be driving 70 in 6th gear, and then the car would buck and the car would drop to 4th gear. It did this for a few days. Had a small hole in my CVT at the top of the transmission. It would only leak CVT fluid when the car was running.

EXACTLY my symptoms as well. So much for this transmission being "bulletproof".

Are there any similarities between the failures that have occurred?

The "hole" that LordWinslow" found is dramatic. Are any of the other symtoms or experience usable to figure out what has happened?

It would be interesting to see the cause for antsmini. Winslow having a hole/fluid leak isn't as worrying. I defy anyone to not blow their tranny after the fluid has leaked out.

The fact that there was a hole to begin with would be quite a worry for me.

Stuff happens; we can all accept that, but getting to an understanding of why these things have occurred is important too. It seems that the CVT is being "exchanged" versus "repaired" by MINI. I'm totally OK with this approach because it means that the units are being examined (by ZF Getreibe?) for causes, and that owner probably gets a better car with the new unit installed.

Another story here is that MINI is making good on warranty representations.

Had to have my transmission replaced after 8,000 km... and the car's spent nearly a month at
BMW being serviced since we got it in August '03. Besides the tranny, also had software updated, wheels realigned, fuel sensor replaced and inside door panels re-attached.

Hopefully all is now sorted, but it doesn't exactly fill me with confidence - I'm not sure I'd get a CVT once it's off warranty. That said, I do love driving it, even though I've always preferred manual gearboxes to automatics.

33k and the belt broke leaving a stop light of course I was going a whoping 10mph when it happened. MINI towed it to the dealer by my house(eastbay) instead of the one I was by (S.F.). They are putting a new tranny in and sending the old one to germany. They gave me a bimmer to drive ( its very boring ) so far so good .
