Offline | ADO15: I don't think the Steptronic works that way. Because we are still in the break-in period we haven't tried the Sport/Steptronic mode yet. We are just putting around in "Drive." Tell you what. Tomorrow I will scan the owner's manual pages dealing with the Steptronic and post the pages here, so that you can read them for yourself. Bill Sz. |

Offline | can you clarify what you mean by the gear "pattern"? Correct me if I am wrong, I believe the sequential shift layout is similar to that of the streptronic in BMWs. When in 'D', push to the right to activate the sequential shift mode, then pull back to shift up and push to shift down. |

Offline | Basil, The Smart got a system like that - and it justfeels completely backward to me... I'm "used" to sequential gearboxes as used in racecars and there you pull to shift up and push to shift down - mostly due to the fact that it's easier (G-Forces etc) and secondly because it feels more natural I think... Karman, With "pattern" I mean whilch way you push/pull the stick to shift up/down... just like I wrote :-) As for std. BMW steptronic boxes; I've never driven one so I wouldnt know... I've only driven the Smart - and that one got it all wrong (imho) - hence my question to Bill ![]() Bill, I dont think you need to read the manual for that - isn't it written with "big" letters just beside the stick? Certainly look like it to me... "Life begins @ 7,000 rpm's" |

Offline | Hmmm, it's interesting. The G-force's comment makes a lot of sense, but otherwise it seems illogical. Maybe it's just a case of what your used to.... I'm almost certain the Porsche tiptronic boxes "push" for up changes. I'll check up, and if wrong, report back. ![]() |

Second, I do look forward to your reply on Steptronic directions, I am as confused as ever. ![]() Cooper, CVT Pepper White, black roof & mirrors, chrome trim, Xenon headlamps, foglamps US Premium & Sport packages, 16" 5-Star wheels, DSC, black profile leather, heated seats "I'll drive." |

Offline | thanks for the clarification here because by saying pattern you really confused me in your original message. As for the shifting directions, I believe you already have the solutions to your inquiry. It is indeed pull back to shift up and push for down just as the sticker says next to the shifter so it is indeed the identical style in the BMWs. Basil, You are right in that it's push to shift up/pull to shift down in the Porsches. Below is a pic of the transmission setup on the 993 generation 911s so it is indeed correct. AFAIK, the current 996 generation of 911s which are equipped with tiptronic tranmissions only have the button shifts on the steering wheel for shifting. here's a pic of a 993 Carrera w/ tiptronic transmission ![]() Last edited by KarmanS : Apr 15th, 2002 at 12:46 AM. |
