CVT and salesspeed

In a Dutch car magazine called "Autoweek" there is a driving report of a cooper with cvt.
Ofcourse the drivers are thrilled of the handling of the car and the souplesse to drive it.

As you maybe dont know but cvt was invented by a dutchman called Hub van Doorne.
As they talked to this man he insured them that Mini's with building date September will be available with salesspeed gearbox. (only for One and Cooper, because the S is to powerfull).

Can you imagine this : Driving youre Cooper and swifting through the gears as Juan Pablo Motoya.

Its getting better every week

What is a "salesspeed gearbox"? Is it different from the Steptronic CVT being sold in the MINI now?

Salesspeed is that you have 2 flaps behind the steering wheel. One on the right to shift up and one on the left for shifting down.
Alfa has got it in the more expensive models and Fiat has it in its latest model.
And ofcourse all the exotic car brands.

I think that would be pretty cool.

However the CVT does slow the car down a fair bit and is a lot more costly to run when you take into account MPG!

Still wouldn't mind one thou

Cooper I do: I think you mean 'selesspeed' instead of 'salesspeed'.

SMART's also have a similar feature (paddles on the steering wheel to shift). This system originates from the formula 1, that's why Ferrari was one of the first to introduce this system in 'production cars'. So you can equip your Ferrari with what they call an 'F1'-system (it's all in the name). Also Maserati offers the same system (that's because it is owned by Ferrari).

Alvast bedankt.

The Alfa 156 Selesspeed has buttons I think on the steering wheel......also normal central shifter controllable......as does the Alfa 147......

If I remember correctly from reading about the Alfa 147 Selespeed, the gearbox is more like a manual transmission than an automatic. It eliminates the clutch pedal, but uses electrical or hydraulic activation of the clutch and the gear change, in the standard 5-speed gearbox instead. This gives much faster gear changes than humanly possible, but retains the regular gear ratios of the manual transmission.

I know that BMW in the US offers SMG-II (their version of a electronically shifted manual transmission) on the M3 series. So I don't think the Selespeed would ever be a factory option, but rather an aftermarket fit instead.
