United-States 2004 CVT "WHINE NOISE" -- NEW TRANSMISSION? HELP.

Hello,
I bought a 2004 CVT Cooper in June. All has been well.

It now has 8,500 or so miles on it.

I took it in to the dealer a few weeks ago for its first maintanence, and all seemed well.

But a day or so later I noticed a whine coming from the engine that gets louder and higher pitched the faster the car goes--seems to be by the driver side. You can hear it even with the radio on. It also "whines" just in neutral as I roll down a hill.

Took it into the shop today (Saturday, Oct. 16), and they called back and said they may need to replace the transmission! They are currently looking into it....and I thought I'd ask you guys for any suggestions.

Does this seem normal?
Could the mechanic have messed somoething up during the maintenence / oil change?
Does this problem sound liek anything else you've heard of?

Please help by replying, or emailing me direct, or even calling me!

Thanks everyone!

I have a 2004 CVT, ~10,000 miles. I have a little turbo like whine during acceleration, but that is about it. I have noticed it more since I turned the A/C off.
