You've got a real collection of issues to resolve if you want to try this route. They include the ZF Gearbox, the TRITEC motor, and the MINI software.

The question of applying more power to the MINI Cooper CVT has been talked about in several Threads. You can find others using Search right here on MINI2.com, but here's a few to get you started:

CVT FAQ draft

Got a letter from ZF

Cooper CVT engine mods

The major concern is pushbelt slip. "Slip is death [to the gearbox pulleys]" according to ZF engineers and others who should know. The ZF ecoTronic VT1F in our cars is "calibrated" for 150Nm torque. Clamping pressure (on the pulleys) is heavily managed by the computer, the MINI software, and the "map" of expected values.

Without first altering this map to "know" what torque to expect at each rpm and ratio combination, the clamping pressure will be wrong, and you'll have slip (wear) that directly leads to failure. I think this is why no warranty coverage is extended to CVT mods, and why none of the discussed aftermarket ideas ever came out to the market.

We do have the JCW exhaust as an approved MINI accessory, which enhances the appearance and sound but leaves torque as is.

You will find many people who have put mods on their cars. I'd really like to hear how these experiments are going. Who's still out there to comment and update us?

Personally, I would recommend viewing the Cooper and One CVT-equipped cars as a "spec" package, the output shouldn't be increased. We have a specific motor output, a superb gearbox to put it to the ground, and optimized software to manage the clutches, ratio motor, and clamping pressures, so our challenge becomes learning how to drive this specific package to it's potential.

Just like one-design sailing, the differences are really driver knowledge, skill, and experience. It's great fun to turn heads on the track in the MINI Cooper CVT.

In this Forum, carefully supported by Paul Mullett's MINI2.com, we've developed a collection of data, analysis, stories, hints, technique, and simple sharing of experiences during the past couple of years. I think the owners who participate here advanced the reputation of the CVT-equipped cars, to the point where there's now better understanding and acceptance of the cars.

Use Search to explore what others have said.
