Offline | Maintenance of Automatic Transmission I have been generally frustrated by the lack of information about the maintainability of the 6-speed transmission in the automatic MINI Cooper S. Specifically, I am attempting to determine whether it is possible to completely replace the transmission fluid in the transmission and torque converter using commercially available transmission fluid exchange equipment. MINI has been completely useless, referring me to the dealership service department. The local dealership service department hasn't gotten trained in servicing the automatic transmission (and to add insult, their response is that there is no need to replace the transmission fluid). Notwithstanding the response that there is no need to replace the transmission fluid, there is a higher load on the transmission fluid from a higher engine output (as would be the case with a supercharged engine; adding the JCW package would further stress the transmission fluid). Prudent maintenace (otherwise known as preventive maintenance) would indicate a replacement of the automatic transmission fluid at least every 2 years. The best that has been offered by the local dealer in the way of how to replace the fluid is by evacuation from the filler tube. The problem with that approach is that there is the old fluid in the torque converter that will contaminate the new fluid. Other manuafacturers provide for the complete replacement of tranmission fluid using transmission fluid exchange equipment (general cost is ~USD $120/replacement, which is cheap insurance against a $3,000+ transmission replacement exposure after warranty is over). Does ANYONE know whether it is possible to completely exchange the transmission fluid without a complete removable of the engine/transmission from the car? |

Offline | Thank you for the thread info. If any of the moderators want to delete this thread, I have no objection. The original thread addresses the issue completely. The only problem is the continuing lack of information on whether the transmission fluid can be completely exchanged short of a complete removal of the engine/transmission from the car. ![]() |
