| Motoring with Audrey | The Creation/Life of a Mini....Service Engine Light On (My Blog) Just thought I'd post (and keep updated as I go) the story of my MCSa. I hope this is the right place for this, if not would one of the Mods/Admins move it for me. I've tried to compress the story as I'm sure nobody wants to read one that's very long. Thanks and enjoy... Aug. 2004 Saw my first Mini Cooper on the road driving to work in Houston (Texas, USA). It was a black base model Mini. Maybe a 2003 or 2004 model. From this day foward, everytime I saw a Mini....I smiled. Maybe I had seen them before but this was when I started noticing them all the time. Though there are not really a lot of them around town. Dec. 2004 Decided about this time next year I would be getting a new car. It was time to give up on the 1989 Buick Ave. and find the right car for me. To find "MY" car. Was hoping to get one of those fresh looking Mini Coopers, but was not sure I'd be able to afford one or even fit into one at my 6'-2" 220lbs frame. At this point, I knew very little about the car itself except for the exterior design of car. Jan. 21st, 2005 On the way to my fiance's house, Ruth (my old 89 Buick) broke down just a few yards from her house. Finally got it restarted, made it to the house, and stayed off the roads the rest of the night. That next morning took it in to her mechanic only to receive it back a few days later with "nothing wrong". Jan. 25th, 2005 After thinking the car was good to go, I kept driving it. Today it died on me while on the highway. Not Safe! I realized it was a computer issue, but if its not acting up, one can not tell what the problem is exactly. Looks like I'll be getting a new car sooner then I planned. So which car did I think of first? The Mini. Jan. 26th, 2005 I started looking at cars, and trying to find the right "design style" for me. As someone in the design field, that is important to me. Though it has to be realible as well. I found it tough to find another car that sparked my interest as the Mini did. I decided to look more into 3 cars. The Ford Mustang, The Acura RSX, and the Mini Cooper. Feb. 5th, 2005 Test drove the Acura RSX. Small car, but very realible. To small for me to drive. Hard to look over my shoulder and my hair hits the roof. But it will not break down on me. Handles well, but it felt just like another car. Nothing special. Having talked to another tall friend of mine who has been in a Mini and reading on the internet (including Mini2) I decided to test drive it second. I fit perfectly into it and felt more comfortable inside. Plus without even driving it, it felt more like its own car, rather then just another car. I test drove the base model, as I was still doing "research" on the Mini and feel in love with it. Was curious how the MCS would handle/drive. Didn't bother going on my third test drive as I wanted to do a little more searching and reading about the Mini before I made up my mind. Feb. 12th, 2005 Made up my mind on buying a Mini. Made up my mind to get a MCSa, but wanted to test drive one before doing so. Luckly the Mini of the Woodlands had one. Keith got the key for the red MCSa, handed them over and off we went. Beautiful drive. That's all I can say. Just beautiful. Once we got back to the dealership, I took the specs I was looking for out of my pocket and we ordered my Mini. MCSa, Pepper White, Black top & mirrors, Black Bonnet Stripes, Chrome Interior with the Sports Package among a few other things. I believe I was to be a Week 12 Production, if I read the computer correct. Only bad thing is, with so many problems with my current car, I'm not sure if I'll make it to the middle/end of April delivery date I was given by Keith (my Adivsor at MINI of the Woodlands). But I decide to press on and take my chances at owning my own Mini, custom designed to my liking. Feb. 13th, 2005 Happy Birthday to Me! Turned 25 today. I checked online to track my Mini. "On Order" The wait begins. Feb. 22nd, 2005 Checked online to put a huge smile on my face to see my Mini moving along and now "Scheduled For Production." Feb. 23rd, 2005 Decided to call ASK-MINI and found out production would be finished March 1st, 2005. Yes, 17 days after I ordered it. So give or take with no problems, I should be receiving it it around March 30th. A full month before Keith had mentioned I would get it. Things change, things happen. I know I could get caught up in the shipping across the pond but my excitement grows each and every day. The background to every computer I use (work and home) are set to pictures of Mini Coopers. Feb. 27th, 2005 I decide to start a blog of sorts on the MINI2 forums noting the beginning/birth of my MINI. From the day I dreamed up its specs to the day I get it to my first joy ride and beyond. Mar 1st, 2005 I called 1-866-ASK-MINI today to check and see if my March 1st finished with production was going to be true. I blamed it on forgetfullness and wanted to see when it was suppose to be finished, but we all know that's not true. And to my surprise, they finished it yesterday and is waiting to be shipped. With that, my 2005 Pepper White Mini Cooper S automatic is born!!! So 16 days after I ordered her, she is born. Though after checking WW (Wallenius Wilhelmsen) nothing is listed under my VIN #. I've read about others being shipped by another company but have not searched for it here on MINI2 yet as I do not remember the name of it off the top of my head. Mar 2nd, 2005 Finally got a chance to look up the WW (Wallenius Wilhelmsen) site and see if I was booked for a vessel. The Resolve is my new lady of the moment. She'll be bringing my Mini to me this month. Apparently she left Bremerhaven, Germany today and with a stop in Belguim before arriving in South Hampton, United Kingdom to pick my my Mini. After boarding the Resolve on March 4th its headed my way. The estimated date of arrival in Charleston is March 18th. (a little over a month after ordering her). All this comes at the right time as my car is having more problems. Infact it looks like I might have to pay anywhere from 500-1000 US Dollars just to drive my car for the next month until my Mini gets here. Just wish I could put that money towards the Mini, but I have to get to work some how. Mar. 6th, 2005 Checked WW (Wallenius Wilhelmsen) and it seems my wait really now begins. My car is still booked for the Resolve, which left the UK on Saturday. But after looking up by booking number I noticed a lot of other cars that were just booked and at the dock while others said they were loaded. Mine was not. I really hope I was able to make it on the ship, as I am without a car now. Old Ruth finally broke down, so I'm stuck without a car until my Mini comes in. But something tells me mine is not on the vessel, so here's to the next vessel or a mistake on their site. Mar. 7th, 2005 Thanks for all the feedback guys. And Tigger if you really wanted to help you could sneak out there one night and load my car up on the next boat to the States. April, middle-end of April was my original scheduled time for me to pick it up. As I thought I was a week 12 build, but it seems they were able to build her sooner. So I was, or rather still am, hoping since it was built before week 12 (it was a week 8 build) that I can get it sooner. As you can tell from some of the posts above that I was really hoping for a end of March deliveryh instead of the end of April.Well I checked the WW site again today, as I've read you should check it two days after the vessel leaves to see if you are really on it or find the latest info. And to my sadness I got the error message (or as I've began to call it, red text of hell) saying there is no tracking information available for my CargoID. I guess I was not able to be so lucky as get on the Resolve...thus my problems continue. I guess I will start looking into K-Line (I think that's the name) that I've seen a few others say they are on. Wish me luck, I'll need it. Mar. 7th, 2005 Update: Just checked WW again. If I'm not on the Resolve the next three ships I could make are Elektra (Mar 11th - Mar 24th), Liberty (Mar 12th - Mar 24th), and the Takasago (Mar 17th - Mar 30th). As much as I like the name Takasago I hope for my sake that I'm on the Resolve or make the Elektra or Liberty. Mar. 8th, 2005 To show how impatient I am, I called ASKMINI a few minutes ago and got the latest on my MINI. Its at the port and awaiting a vessel, which I already knew. And no other info is known at this time. Things I already knew, I sure hope I don't get caught up and it takes a few weeks before it can be shipped over here. I had a nice 45 min walk from work to my apartment today. Bad thing is, I saw two MINIs along the way. Made me wish I had mine. Good thing it was a nice day outside. Well that's about all I have for now, though I found out on the board that another person also ordered the same day as mine, and the same color. Hope they are having better luck getting their memory. Mar. 10th, 2005 GREAT NEWS! My Mini is now En Route and I received a call about the $ side of the new car. Looks like things are starting to move for me once again. I'm stoked about my Pepper White Mini Cooper Sport. Though I was hoping to post pictures to show the vessel on its way, but I am not booked on WW so I am not able to track her along her journey to America. I'm still hoping for a late March delivery but I could live with a very early April delivery.Mar. 12th, 2005 Received another call today. My Mini is due to reach port in Charleston, South Carolina, USA on March 18th. The funny thing is I was oringally booked on the Resolve through WW but did not make that ship so I thought it would be much later then the original March 18th date I was given to finally arrive in the States. And from the looks of things my car left Southampton 7 (seven) days later and will still be arriving on the same day. Probably via an NYK vessel but could be K-Line. Mar. 14th, 2005 My Mini arrives State-side on Friday...this is going to be a long week for me, specially the week after when it leaves the VDC and heads my way. But to feed the crave, I went out and bought the movie The Italian Job just to see the MINIs in it...and to visually practice driving so I too can rob somebody of their gold bars they have laying around. I've also thought about going back to the dealer and "test driving" next weekend, but figured that'd be going a little to far on the obsessed scale. Even though Keith mentioned he'd let me take one out if I wanted to before mine came in.I've been thinking about tinting my windows, but in Texas you can only do 25% on the sides, any% you want on the back, and only a 5" band at the top on your windshield, so I'm not exactly sure if it'd be worth it or not. Specially since the dealer will not go any lower then $400 for it. Besides the heat issue, I think the tinting could look really clean on the pepper white Mini, so I'm leaning towards having it done. Plus its a lifetime warranty, so no worries about it looking bad or messing up in the future. Any opionons out there? Mar. 16th, 2005 Got a call today about my Mini...apparently Leah made a mistake and it won't be state side until March 22nd. Which is four days later then expected...probably because it left 4 days after it was expected as well. So that's the bad news...the good news: my Mini will arrive at the Mini of the Woodlands the last week of March (along with 20 others) and I should be able to pick it up before April 1st. So even though its arriving state side later, I should still be able to pick it up in time. I'm still thinking of getting the window's tinted, but haven't decided 100%. My fiance suggested I put together a CD for my first ride, now I just gotta find the right songs for it. I'm thinking about adding some songs from the Mean Machine soundtrack (I'm sure all the Brits know what movie I'm talking about), and maybe even the Italian Job soundtrack. So we'll see what happens. I have about two weeks to get it done. Mar. 19th, 2005 In 3 days my Mini arrives state side. After a nice enjoyable long voyage (that I wish I could have been on as well) it finally arrives in Charleston at the VDC. While I'm still trying to find the perfect name for my PW MCSa I have decided on a few songs for ride home. Carnaval De Paris and Wings from the Mean Machine Soundtrack, along with RamJam's Black Betty and DC Talk's Jesus Freak. I'm currently driving (well atleast when it works/starts for me) a maroon (well the hood is white from the sun beating down on it) '89 (some think 1889, but it is a 1989) Buick Park Ave and with all the photos I've seen from the CounterfeitMini.com (and on MiniUSA.com) I'm thinking of putting my own stripes on it and turning it into a counterfeit before selling it to the junk yard. Now if I can somehow get more then $400 for it, I'll leave it alone. Ok, so I really would not do anything to it, as I want to get as much as I can for it. Once it arrives at the the dealership and if I can get there I will post some pictures before "the big exchance" and the keys are finally in my hands.Mar. 22nd, 2005 My Mini should arrive safely at the VDC today, so around lunch time I'll probably make a call to my MA to check for sure. The only people I've found difficult to get ahold of are the financial people, but we are (I hope we both are) working on getting everything sorted so I can drive off in my Mini sooner then later. And speaking of picking up my Mini. Last week I was told I should be able to pick it up the last week of March, and as long as nothing goes wrong at the VDC that should remain the same. Small problem arose yesterday those. I work for an architect who often does work outside of Houston and even outside of Texas. And I believe we just got a renovation project in Michigan (1341.39 miles away) and it looks like I might have to go there to measure the darn thing. The sad news is, I might be leaving for it next week so I will not be able to pick up my Mini on time. But I guess there is always good news with bad news. Good news is that I will not have to mess with old Ruth for a week either. I'll post again sometime after lunch once I've verified my Mini is at the VDC trying to get her land legs. Mar. 24th, 2005 Big day for me and my Mini (which is still nameless). It's at the VDC, did arrive on time, and should be here in town at the Mini of the Woodlands Mon-Tues. And should be ready for pickup Wed-Thurs. Just 5-6 days away. I should find out for sure on Monday. Which puts my total time from ordering to delivery date at 45-46 day and about 3 weeks earlier then estimated. Money issue has been worked out, and for the second straight day my old car (Ruth) hasn't started and is currently parked in my office's parking lot. If it gets towed this weekend (which it might) I'm not going to bother getting it out and just walk to and from the office until I can get a rid to go pick up my Mini. Mar. 27th, 2005 Great news! I checked MiniUSA.com and it shows the delivery date now set to....TODAY!!!! Yesterday morning it read the 29th of March, but last night when I checked before going to bed it said the 27th of March. Which means my baby should be at the dealer today? A Sunday, and Easter at that? Doesn't make much sense but maybe it will. Either way I won't be able to pick her up until Thursday. Which gives me Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to drive her around until I have to go to Michigan for 4-5 days. I'm afraid to leave her at the airport or my apartment complex. Isn't it best for her to be driven atleast once while I'm gone? If so, who do I let drive her? I've actually thought about driving up there but it will take to long to even consider it. I'm so exicted...as are my friends. That way I'll stop telling them where my car is and how much I want it, because I'll be to busy driving it. Mar. 28th, 2005 BIG NEWS! I pick up my Mini tomorrow around 5pm EST (4pm CST)!!!!!!! I couldn't wait until Thursday so I asked the boss to take off on Tuesday rather then Thursday...he said yes. I spoke with Keith and he said Tuesday would be good for him and to come on in! I'll bring the camera and snap a few shots while there for all to see late tomorrow tonight. Looks like I've finally joined the Mini Family...and once I look more into my $ I'll be supporting MINI2 and honking and flashing my lights at other Mini's around town! No sleep for me tonight. Mar. 29th, 2005 What a beautiful car the Mini Cooper is. Specially the MCS. I left work at 2 o'clock with the hopes of trading in old Ruth...with no luck. She wouldn't even start at all. So Ruth is still at the office while Audrey (yes my Mini has a name, and I'll explain later) sits here at the complex under cover from the rain. Keith and Jessica (at Mini of the Woodlands) were great and helped speed up the process as best they could. Apparently 12 other Minis were being delivered this week, and 4 of which were today. My fiance took some pictures which I will be sharing. The 40 mile ride home was great...I soon found myself driving behind another Mini (black). It was fun to see other people see the two of us driving and smile and wave. They had New Mexico plates so I'm not sure if they were just visiting or moved here recently. As for the name Audrey...one of my favorite foreign films is Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain (Amélie for Americans) of which the beautiful Audrey Tautou is the star of. With a classic name like Audrey I thought that would be a perfect fit for the Pepper White & Black Mini I had ordered. Thus the name Audrey for my 2005 PW MCSa. I'm so excited and not sure what else to say...I want to go drive all night. Ok, I'll share those pictures now.... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Apr. 14th, 2005 WOW WHAT A CAR!!! I've had Audrey for a little over 2 weeks now and have loved every second I've had to drive her. (hence my disappearance from MINI2) Having to go out of town was good, specially since I had to drive a Grand AM (boo hiss!) instead of my MINI. Now remember I'm still in the breakin period so I'm doing my best to stay under the 4500rpm (though I'll admit I've gotten close a few times, but only close). I'm currently around 550 miles. Currently I'm getting around 21-22 miles per gallon, so I was a bit bummed about that since I was told its 26/32. I figured with my driving I should be around 28, guess I was wrong. Last night on my way home from my fiance's house I got stuck in traffic and shifted back to regular automatic. Two motocycles soon caught up to me (while stuck in draft) but the light was close, we were almost through the slow part where we could speed back up. I shifted back into auto-manual (someone else called it that on MINI2 and I liked it so I'm going with that too) and the three of us took off. The two motocycles in front and me just trailing far enough behind to not be on their rear. From the look I got from their afterwards they were surprised I was keeping up with them. Granted they didn't gun it from the started (since I didn't want to go over my 4500 rpms), but I got her up to 100mph/160kpm on Highway 59. Good fun! She handles super well, even considering the new car stage where most every car handles well. Its hard not to zip around and drive her like a go-kart, because that's just how she handles. The Mini is clearly in a class above by itself. Not sure if I've mentioned this but I was told "you will feel every bumb you drive over in the Mini" - not so, well not more then any other car. The best part about the auto-manual has to be paddles. Gives us a thrill to drive it like a race car, specially going 100 last night. And I felt very safe doing so, like I was in control of the car. I can really see how and why people race Mini's. I get so many smiles and nods while driving around town. And the secretary at works loves Audrey, she keeps saying how beautiful it is, etc. etc. She's getting annoying, but I love to see people smile and look at her (Audrey). I'm still looking for the right road to enjoy her the most as there are not many slopes or turns around here. As of right now, I'm so stoked about my Mini, and I wash her weekly. I still have to get the inisishield installed and will do so next weekend. I'm having to be a little careful as I don't want to get any small dents or whatnot due to little pebbles the the invisishield would protect against. He was booked up for this weekend and I was out of the town prior to last weekend. But they will give me a loaner car while Audrey's in the shop...I just hope its another Mini. A few days ago I passed a red MINI with black top and stripes so I waived but didn't get a reply. I've yet to have a Mini driver waver back, but oh well. Maybe I'll come see one of you guys just to have someone wave back.Apr. 25th, 2005 Well Audrey got a nice bath yesterday...almost looked as sharp as when I picked her up at the dealer. And then what happens? It rained last night, and even though I park under something, it still got to her a little. Everything has been great with the Mini. My Fiance and I enjoy taking her out on the town, even if we have nowhere to go. I recently read the thread about the service engine soon light coming on in MCSa's and was hoping I'd be one of the few not to get it, but on the way to work this morning. Sure enough, it came on. So I've got a call in to the dealer this morning to see about it. I'm trying to be more careful just incase its not the glitch. But I'll keep you updated as I find out more on it. My first complaint: My invisishield has yet to be installed. Now I wish I would have waited a week to pick her up to have them install it. Oh well, my mistake I guess. I was hoping to have it done one weekend, but he was booked up, so I scheduled for the next weekend. I called later in the week to get directions (as it wasn't going to be done at the MINI dealership, but still by a MINI employee (or rather a BMW guy). Well when I called, he said he couldn't do it that weekend. Why? Because the guy from last weekend didn't show and was suppose to go this weekend. So I got bumped. You'd think I'd just get bumped a week (as I have to do it on the weekend), but no. He gave me no idea of when its going to be done. I wish he would have called me last weekend to take his place, I would have driven out there in no time flat. I almost just feel like getting a refund on it and going without the invisishield, but I know in the long run (if I can get it installed) it will be better for the car. And since this is my first new car, I'm really trying to take good care of it. So I guess this is something else I'll have to keep you updated on. to be continued... | Motoring with Audrey | Mar 01 I called 1-866-ASK-MINI today to check and see if my March 1st finished with production was going to be true. Offline | Just read this far... Please keep us posted. Interestingly, if it left Southampton on Saturday it should have floated past my bit of the cornish coast sometime today heading West along the English Channel. I feel like I should go and hurry it up a bit for you Tigger. |
