| MINI2 Newbie | the order dilemma... ok, I want to put my deposit down on Monday for an April build... I had settled on an MCS after coming to the realization that re-learning the manual (it's been a good 10 years) really won't be that hard (so long as I can drive the car back from the dealer after midnight - )... but I made the mistake Friday of going to drive the MCSa... and was floored by how fun it was... and how you could make it behave oh-so-not like a typical automatic... so what was the deciding factor(s) for all of you that have gone the auto route? I live in an urban area and spend a goodly amount of time in Boston, so there will be lots of city driving involved... HELP!!! ![]() |

Offline | Urban driving FWIW - I always thought sports cars should have manual transmissions. Mine did, and I appreciated the control. It wasn't until I drove my Porsche (manual transmission) through Los Angeles during rush hour that I came to understand why anyone would choose an automatic/cvt. I was amazed the clutch survived the experience and can't imagine stop and go in that environment on a daily basis w/ a manual. Other owners would post concerning the Tiptronic transmission (paddle shifting, etc) and others would tease, but at that moment, I understood. If I were to drive in Boston traffic - don't know it well but I do know Bethesda/D.C. - and an auto w/ paddle shifting would be my choice as well. We have the 04 Prius (CVT) for the Southern California times and the MINI will be for Arizona, where outside Phoenix and Tucson, it still is relatively reasonable. IMHO - Scott |

Offline | Deciding factor for me was a left kneecap that's 1.5 inches out of place. I have always driven a manual, but me and my knee are not getting any younger. Thus the issue for me was not manual vs. automatic. It was MINI automatic vs. other cars in automatic. Needless to say the MINI won hands down in that contest. I was less than thrilled with the CVT so I ended up waiting an extra 7 months for the MCSa to go into production. I currently have 900 miles on my MCSa, and truly love it. Now what to do about my right kneecap (that ones only 1 inch too high). ![]() |
