MCSA Convert. Engine light CRAZINESS!!!

OK. So after our break in period, at about 1600 miles and not even two weeks, our engine light went on.

Brought to our dealer...and they got it off, but put 75 miles on it, "making sure it stayed off" after replacing an o2 sensor. We got it back to our house...and back on it went. Our dealer is about an hour away, we called them to let them know.

Since then, light has gone on and off in wierd incriments...anywhere from 5 miles to 100 miles or more...we have about 3200 miles on the car now and the engine light has come on 6 or 7 times since we brought it in with about 2000.

Any ideas of what I should do? Has this happened to anyone else?

Thanks!
I will continue to motor with the engine light on!

Sorry to hear that. No one likes to have trouble with a new car.

Keep the dealer in the loop, and make sure that you keep a record of the times that you call them, and their advice.

No manufacturer covers damage that occurs if you operate a vehicle with a warning light on, or with coolant or oil loss. In another, very bad life, I was a claims adjuster for an automotive warranty company.

Be sure and keep all paperwork from the times that you take it in for work. MINI is really good about warranty work, but it never hurts to be prepared...

Keep us posted.
Jim

engine light

--Wow that sounds crazy. You might get caught in a catch 22 if it breaks down seriously and the computer reports that you drove for a long period with the engine light on. I'd say if this car is within lemon law periods, I'd make the dealer give me a new one if it were me. I think it's between 3 months and 6 months depending on the state where you can claim the car is un-repairable by the dealer and therefore seriously defective. I'd bring the car to the dealer everytime the light comes on and document when you did it. If the dealer can't fix it, and they won't replace the components that control the engine light, Ie. ECU, etc etc.., then you could probably make them take the car back and replace it under the lemon law with enough dealer visits.

I know it's a hassle, but it's better than ending up with a 20k plus lemon. Good luck I hope they either find the problem or give you a new one.

GBMINI#3 turned on its SES (for the second time) last night - see my weblog entry which includes a copy of an internal MINI document which indicates an issue / interaction between the automatic transmission and the engine diagnostics.

Well that helps out TREMENDOUSLY!

I thought I was the only fool who wanted to be a guinea pig for the auto!

Hopefully this "software" issue is worked out.

My airbag light also went on and the dealership is now telling me that there is a recall on this !

Really?! I have not heard that one before ... but the airbags were re-designed for Jan'05 production so, like the new tranny, any new part on the car is subject to "teething troubles"

United-States Our SES light is on and off

You're not the only one . Our SES light goes on and off and it is very annoying to see. I called the dealer and they told me to call when it comes back on. Well it came back on today. So I'll call the dealer . I've been writing down the mileage and when I call them. I'm guessing I'm going to have to drive up to the dealer to get it serviced soon. It only has about 1200 miles on it. It's running great. It's just some stupid censor.

Our SES light started acting up at around 2100 miles and came on steady after around 3100 miles, right after I got it back from a check out and oil change at the dealer. I've been living with it for a couple of weeks and will take it in this Friday and see what they can fond out.

It's just such a pain to get to the only Mini dealer in San Diego county......Amazing only 1 dealer for all these people !

Picked up my mini today at Flow...hour and a half away from me in Raleigh! Again, 1 dealer for all of NC! Incredible! ANYWAY...

Engine light craziness is because my mini needs a "software update"?! that mini is not yet finished perfecting...anyone else heard of this??!!??

The airbag light trouble is coming from a passenger side airbag sensor that is on back order nation wide....and my dealer can't even give me an estimate of when it will be avail.

So...for now I will be motoring with lights aglow...with "nothing really wrong" as the service technician tells me, with my car.

Atleast I got a free starbucks coffee and panera bagel to get me back home from the dealership.

Congrats on the new car
Read my post #4 above - yes there is a glitch which will need a software update. There are not many online posts so it is clearly not a significant percentage issue, but it is there ...

Have not heard about general airbag problems - but again, like the new auto transmission, the airbags are redesigned for 2005 (the real year, not the model year!) and often changes introduce new issues ...

SES Light update from San Diego

Well we are living with it until someone can figure out the fix. The dealer(s) I have talked to do NOT have a clue and just keep telling me to re-seat the gas cap!!!

So I am just going to ignore the light until Mini gets this one figured out.

Cheers!

BTW Weather report from San Diego.........High of 78 today with clear skies, Oh wait that was yesterday, or maybe the day before...oops that's for tomorrow......Oh never mind!!!

just got mine back from the dealer...they replaced an O2 sensor...also had the alarm LED stalk installed...they had the car for a day and a half...seems OK for now...we'll see if the SES light returns..
PS: thanks very much to the tech who came in on Saturday(his day off) to finish working on my MINI...the staff at Habberstad Mini are all very professional and courteous.

she's so fine, there's no tellin' where the money went.....simply irresistable !!! --Robert Palmer
