Offline | Well... I've been monitering my fuel comsumption ever since I picked up my MCSA from Feb 28. I know that when my MCSA is being run in the fuel consumption will be more than Expected. but from my one month experience and now my MCSA is just RUNNED IN .. 2000KM ... I'm seeing some really crazy fuel burning going on with my MCSA... so here's a little detail and hopely someone can give me some opinion or relieve . Mind you my fuel gauge reading is from a Cockpit chrono package Gauge. 1) not a fast driver.. no hard acceleration ... I do mostly 110KM/H on highway... I bearly run into much stop and go traffic because of the natural of the working hours of my job. I do about 400KM a week 2) When ever I take a 100 KM highway trip ( back and forth ) ... my fuel gauge nearly show me that at the end of my trip my MCSA burned up 1/4 of the tank. I can actually see the Feul gauge needle drop as I'm driving on the highway. doing a 50 KM ( back and forth ) only burn up marginally less fuel if not no difference at all ... 3) for some reason... I can do the same 50Km city trip and acutally use less gas ?? I've done it 4 times and seen the same result ... I filled up in the gas station at the end of the block.. reset the Trip OD ...go.. and come back... 4) someone please tell me that my fuel comsumption is going to be better later on when my MCSA hits a higher mileage ! 2005 HB/HB MCSA !! ALL the package... ALL the Fun .. ALL the time !!! |

Offline | You should have bought an economy car then. What is your exact mileage?? From the sounds of it you don't get too much worse than my MCS with the six speed manual transmission. |

Offline | The behavior of the fuel gauge that you're describing just reaffirms that the fuel gauge is not the way to figure out what mileage you're getting. Which is how it is with all cars. If you really want to know what your fuel consumption is, what you need to do is fill the tank, reset your trip odometer, drive the car, when it's time to refuel write down how much fuel you put in, repeat. After a couple of tanks calculate the mileage based on how far you drove and how much fuel it took. Looking at the gauge and trying to estimate how good (or bad) your fuel mileage is based on the gauge's motions will just drive you nuts. ![]() Last edited by rsinsheimer : Mar 28th, 2005 at 04:45 PM. |

Offline | Well...the 6 speed manual MCS is a pretty thirsty beast. And usually an automatic transmission causes an additional loss of fuel economy...so its not entirely surprising that your burning more fuel than you would think a "small car" ought. While MINI advertises that the car should "sip not guzzle"...the reality is that the MCS can't fairly be called an "economy car" when it comes to fuel consumption (unless the base of comparison is a Hummer, et al.) ![]() |

Offline | bad gas mileage --An automatic shouldn't eat gas THAT badly tho. I mean I used to drive a Dodge Dakota truck and that beast would show gas gauge needle movement stopped in rush hour traffic, but never on the freeway. Most cars are supposed to do better on the Freeway in terms of fuel economy unless you're driving a hybrid. --My co-worker who has an S and drives like a leadfoot says he still gets 25mpg. He has a six speed in it and he admits if he'd let up more often it would probably get closer to 30mpg. --Yes I agree you should check via trip-meter how many miles per gallon you're getting. If something is wrong you want to find out soon before any serious damage occurs. --pyratio |

| MINI2 Regular | We've had our MCSa for 4 weeks now, with 1300 miles on the clock. We got the Sat Nav system and it has a "computer" with two fuel consumption monitors, which can be independently reset. The first 2 weeks we were averaging 26mpg. I reset trip 1 after two weeks and that is now averaging 29.9mpg. I am not unhappy with the economy, but I'm also not surprised. It is, at the end of the day, a Supercharged 16v sports tuned engine. I'd also echo the advice of others; Fill tank, note liters - zero trip. Fill tank, note liters - note trip, zero trip. Rinse, repeat.... A couple of times until you have an average mileage for an average tank filling. Let us know how you get on. R56 JCW Cooper S Auto. Laser Blue, Black Roof, R105's, Sat Nav.... the list goes on. R53 Cooper S Auto. Chilli Red, R95's. Playmini Catback Exhaust. |

Offline | I'm in the same mode, our MCSa also has 2 trip computers and NAV. After 3100 miles, including the break-in we are averaging around 24.7MPG. I have reset the #1 computer with each tank and left the #2 alone trying to see what kind of overall mileage we get. The wife commutes 14 miles each way to work with a mix of Freeway and surface (50/50) and I commute to work 66 Miles each way mostly freeway (95/5) and here's what I have seen. When I drive the car to and from work I get around 28 - 29MPG, when I drive it on the weekends (read fun time) I am getting around 21 or so MPG as I just can't seem to keep my foot out of it! My wife seems to be getting around 26 MPG with her overall driving and much less aggressive style, but she is no "Little old lady", just not as aggressive as me. I did see one tank as low as 19.8MPG (that was fun!!!!!!!!!!!) and one at 31.2 (Boring!!!!!!!!!!!!).......personally I prefer fun, but now that gas is all the way up to $2.50 Gal. for Super I'm still going for fun! Life is short...........Go Fast! Hope this helps. ![]() |

Offline | When comparing MPG, don’t forget that a UK gallon is not the same size as a US gallon 1 gallon [US, dry] = 4.4048838 litre 1 gallon [US, liquid] = 3.7854118 litter 1 gallon [UK] = 4.54609 litre I too have the sat nav, and am returning 25ish, up from 22 for the first 100 miles. Piers |

Offline | Anything will beat my Jeep Liberty (which the Mini will co-exist with) which is lucky to get 18 miles per gallon (in highway driving!) So I'd be happy if my MCSa gets 22-25mph! (Of course my Kawasaki W650 gets 50 miles per gallon...) - John Connor |

Offline | All this whining! At least petrol (that's GAS to you!) is basically free in the US. My MCS does about 24 mpg which equates to about 200 miles from a full tank, which costs £40+/- (80 Bucks!) Get off your computer, get out the house, get in your MCS and fill it with the best fuel you can find and think of us over here taking out mortgages if we have to go more than round the block!
