Angry failed CVT @ 500 miles!

Okay, please ignore my user name for this post, as I have an 03 Cooper S, but that is not what I'm writing about here.

A relative of mine just took delivery last month of a new Cooper convertible with the CVT. The other day, with just over 500 (very calm) miles on the odometer, the car started bucking and shuddering, at which point the owners stopped driving it, awaiting a tow. The dealer called today and said they're replacing the whole damn transmission!

Needless to say, I was amazed at this, given that it's a brand new car and that my Cooper S has been reasonably good quality (at least no major problems - plenty of visits to the dealer, though. Anyone else heard of this complete CVT failure??

Thanks

Unfortunately, there's always bound to be a few bad apples in the bunch. Your relation just happened to get stuck with one of them.

I now have over 43,000 miles on my 2004 CVT, and it's still running like a champ! And I'm not exactly gentle with it either!!

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully the service department will also fix the dent in your friend's confidence in his MINI. I have over 55000km on mine and it is still going strong.

mini flip out

my mini flipped out after 250 miles and although it was a semi minor thing it's very upsetting.one wonders about how much does the customer have to pay to get a quality product. it's everywhere from cars to refrigerators. perhaps it the state of things

My 02 CVT has 37,000miles on the clock. I'm not gentle with mine and often use SD for engine braking and cornering! I think you were both very unlucky to have the CVT fail. Having said that the one major reason I extended my warrenty was in case of transmission failure I understand it's about £1700 to replace, ouch!
