Offline | acceleration the mini cooper does not have good acceleration speed...i was wondering... normally it is possible to lower the gear ratio...for a faster acceleration and lower top speed. BUT since the cvt has varying gear ratio....is there another way to gain faster acceleartion?? at the same time keep the car stock? thnx mini cooper chilli ![]() mountain passes ^^v |

Offline | hey, thanks for posting this question...I too am after a little bit more oomph from my Mini when accelerating. It pulls away too slowly....Other than that, I am happy with my car ![]() |

Offline | it's the usual quest for bhp/tonne. either u increase bhp or decrease weight. smaller rims / tyres can help or chipping, filter changes etc. or go on a diet and lose 15kilos. lol! that'll shave some time. ![]() you should try accelerating without the air-cond turned on. it sucks quite a bit of power from the engine. |

| Ride The Dragon! | You can also try the 1-D-SD 'launch' technique. It works like this: from a dead stop, have the car in 1st. When you're ready to go, press the gas pedal all of the way down until you hit the resistance point, but don't go past. (Leave the gas there until you're done accellerating.) Accelerate until the RPMs are at about 5500, then flick the shifter into D mode, leave it there for a hair longer than a split second, and then shift into SD mode. It'll take a bit of practice getting the timing right, but once you do, you'll be suprised how fast you can take off! (And thanks again to the person who I once again forgot their name who came up with this trick on this board!)-Paul! |

Offline | Does anyone have access to a dyno or dragstrip timing where these ideas can be methodically and objectively compared? We've had significant discussion on this Forum, but the questions have not yet been answered. The "slow" feeling from the CVT under initial acceleration, is its advantage once underway (the clutches). The ZF units does not use a torque converter, it couples engine output to the gearbox through six wet clutch surfaces controlled by the computer. The losses of torque converter is eliminated for road driving, technical cornering, and acceleration (after getting underway). A torque converter gives good start and low end grunt, which can generate wheel spin and an impression. So I still like to see things tested out. 1. Holding the e-throttle to the detent point, not "floored", in Steptronic should not matter. Steptronic gives the goofy faked "shifts" anyway, no matter where the throttle is positioned. -- I still think the "kickdown switch" does more to the program than just engaging the fake shifts. Remember that even ZF Getrieb suggested flooring the throttle initially in SD? 2. Also remember that at Stop, the VT1F is not in any "gear" or Selection, its in Pull-away function. The thrust-belt is positioned onto the fully-open Primary variator pulley shaft to give maximum purchase (lowest ratio). What you want is the shortest reaction time to get moving (the major part of the "slow" impression), and then transfer of maximum torque to the wheels. Once launched the CVT will simply outperform. 3. How do we get this done? '02 MINI Cooper CVT(6/12/02; Indi Blue/Black, R-81 7-hole 15x5.5" or NZO 16x6.5") '67 Austin Cooper S (6/26/67; Tartan Red/Black, 10x4.5") |
