Question Poll: Dealer installed accessories prices

What is your experience with dealer installed accesssory prices? Following is a list of prices quoted to me by Bryan Harris:
roof rack---------$450
Bonnet Stripes----$295
Rally Lights------$850

These look quite high to me. I'm interested to know if these are in line with dealerships nationwide.

Hi ToughTT,

First of all, welcome to MINI2!

I'm obviously not in USA, but the bonnet stripes and rally lights look high priced to me. (Especially the stripes)

Bonnet stripes are two precision cut pieces of high quality sticky vinyl that most people with patience, a spray bottle of detergent solution (1 part washing up liquid to 19 parts water), a squeegee and a pin could fit satisfactorily.

Rally lights are a complex install involving rivetting brackets, careful routing of electrical cables, and even taking out one of the seats to gain access to BC1 (the module that controls the lights) because it's hidden behind a kick panel in one of the footwells. Also, I think MINI dealer needs to reprogram the computer too (quick but requiring specialist equipment)

The roof rack is a complex install involving drilling holes in your MINI's roof, hopefully in the correct place, because they need to line up with screw holes that are prebuilt into the frame.

Why not ask your dealer to break down their prices into parts and labour for you? Find out how many hours they say to fit each accessory, and what their workshop hourly rate is?

As stated in an earlier post, the rally lights can be a tough install, hense my dealer is asking $795. However, I have also heard that this price should come down on 03 models being built now, as future installs are supposed to be easier due to some prewiring that is being provided by Mini at the factory. Is there any truth to this rumor?

MINIUSA build a car can configure your car with factory accessories like stripes and rally lights. If you go to the web site and configure your car, you can get the MSRP for those items.

Didn't work for me. Flow sells the cars at MSRP, but the dealer-installed accessories are higher than MSRP.

I wasn't clear on what I was trying to say: I didn't mean you could buy the accessories at MSRP if you configured you car online, I meant you could find the price.

The MINIUSA site states that the prices in section 5 are for the parts only and don't include installation, paint, etc.

Give a call to the BMW service department of your dealer and ask for the hourly rate (which is completely different in every part of the country, $80-$150 an hour). Ask if it a scaled (it increases for each hour you add) or a fixed rate. Then ask your salesperson how much time it takes to install the items you've asked for.

The Rack is exceedingly labor intensive. 4-6 hours is not out of the question.

The stripes need 1-2 hours to be installed properly, with no bubbles. Some people say that they can do it faster themselves, however, they also are not responsible for administering the warranty on the stripes for the next 4 years/ 50,000 miles.

The lamps are extremely labor intensive as well. 2.5-3.5 hours is about right. Again, for those who say faster, keep the warranty matter in mind.

Lastly, if your salesman is knowledgable and organized, are you paying him for his time taken to get make sure your car is accesorized properly at delivery? Give him the $50 or $100 bucks in the deal (you have asked for something above and beyond the normal car deal). If they keep feeding you inflated numbers even after you've done the math above, just do it on a repair order with a service advisor and keep it out of the deal (your salesman and his manager won't see a dime of that, if they are really being greedy enough to hold $250 bucks on you).

Good luck with your accesories.

The 2003 MINIs do not have a prewire for the driving lamps.

There seem to be two kinds of 2003 MINIs. We've seen 2003 models for a few months, ie with no 12V socket in the boot, with a glovebox available in the UK), but there's a second wave coming.

MINIs starting build in week 48 2002 (that's last week) are different again. It's rumoured we'll see sports steering wheel, sports pedals, harman/kardon option and visibility pack option. That's more changes than we've seen before, and we'll have to wait til these models hit the dealers (next week onwards in UK) to be sure they're not prewiring the driving lamps in 2003 models.

My dealer is selling the Luggage Rack for around $395 (installed). Which if I recall covers the roof rack kit and a luggage basket.

I just had my bonnet strips applied at the dealer last week. The stripes cost $39.50 EACH for the COOPER set. The COOPER S cost a bit more. I would rather of had the S Stripes, as I like that pinstrip black on them, however, they weren't sure how they would fit...and I was not willing to take a chance. The labor was billed at one hour, so the total cost to me was about $212.00.

But they look great. Of course, it has been non-stop rain since the stripes were installed last Thursday here in the SF Bay Area, so I can't really tell you if the stripes make my car go any faster.
