fitted my oil catch can

i fitted my alta oil catch can on my mini probly 4 weeks ago now following the alta instructions and have covered over a thousand miles in the car i checked the other day and the can hadnt caught any substances at all other than a little condensation. so i did a search on here for other methods of plumbing it in and re did it differently. instead of capping off the grey hose i connected 1 side of the catch can to that and the other side of the can to the pvc connection. then over the other side of the block the breather that goes to the induction i plumbed that straight into the breather oin the induction pipe i followed some1s guide on here. it is now catching oil already after a night of driving last night the only thing i wanted to quiery was when the engine is running the vaccum is that great inside the catch can that it sucks the sides of the silocone body of the can inwards is this usual. thankyou

errr, ok. Never fitted one on a Cooper S but on other cars you just connect one side of the can to the rocker breather pipe and the other end somewhere which is clean. From the Alta site it looks different how they attach it, but certainly sounds like you have far more vacumm then id expect from the induction system alone. Pics are always good.

Does yours instructions look anything like this??

The main difference I can see is the T Joint on the breather pipe. But im confused where the other end goes off too....

in your picture thats how i originally plumbed it in by the looks of things and that was catching no oil what so ever thats when i did a few searches on here and NAM and found this other way of plumbing it in. i got rid of the t piece as you can see in the pic the other breather pipe the other end of the block just goes directly to the intake pipe on my alta then. the pipe that disapears in the picture under the intercooler goes to the grey vacuum pipe that gets capped off if you follow the alta instructions

apparently this is a common problem when the catch can is fitted the way i have alta have now countered for this problem and can supply a part apparently to slide in the can to stop the vacuum colapsing it or the other option is to get a bit of rigid pvc pipe to slide in side the can

Yeah I read that earlier on NAM. Looks really interesting what a few people have done like two catch cans. I think pvc drainage pipe is about the right size...like what is used for washing machines and sinks.
