Firmer engine mounts

I just got back from having Mini Madness install a set of lower engine mount inserts in my MCS. An easy half-hour installation.

For $75, they supply a small spool-shaped mount and two polyurethane inserts for the large stock bushing just under and ahead of the passengers feet (US). This proves to be just enough to control most of the fore-and-aft engine roll, without adding a lot of vibration to the car by replacing all five of the mounts.

My goal, for street and enthusiast driving, was to remove the "lurch" that you get when going from full-on the gas to lift-off or lift-off to floored again. I found this forward take-up-the-slack lunge very disconcerting just when I was about to enter curves.

Replacing these two mounts removes maybe 75% of the engine rotation, while adding a small amount of vibration and low-frequency noise. I'd say the added noise is roughly equal to installing a Works or Borla exhaust. It isn't annoying to me, and I'm pretty noise-sensitive.

In addition to removing the "lurch", additional benefits are that clutch takeup when starting out is much smoother and more linear, and shifting feels somewhat more precise, since the gearbox isn't moving around as much.

All in all, money well-spent, and adding Lloyd's heavyweight carpets more than covered the additional noise/vibration these stiffer bushings created.

In the UK, they are less costly direct from Powerflex. Cheap enough to experiment.

After seeing my car on a dyno with the hood up, the amount of engine flex is amazing to see.
