New Zealand Problem with outside temperature indicator

Perhaps someone might be able to identify a problem I have.

When I turn on the ignition (before starting up) there is a beep noise and the outside temperature gauge flashes off and on.

Then the flashing stops and the outside temperature reads minus 40 degrees C and stays on that - even with the car moving.

Obviously it is not that temperature outside the car and there must be a malfunction somewhere.

Do I need to remove the bumper to check the sensor behind the grille, or is there some sort of reset procedure?

The car is about a month out of warranty.

Any help would be appreciated

thnks

The problem is clearly that the temp is not being read right. The rest of the behaviour (the beep, the flashing of the reading, etc) is correct for what the readout is (-40) - it's just that the temperature being reported is clearly *way* off. I would suspect that the lead itself is either damaged or disconnected, causing the unit to read -40c (presumably the lowest number that the guage allows). I've got *no clue* how to go about proving / fixing it though... good luck!

Try disconnecting and reconnecting the battery or there's a guide to do a software reset by using the button on the speedo if you can find it. Does the same job as disconnecting battery.

It was acceptable in the 80's

Also, don't have to remove the bumper. Raise the car up; drop the tray, voila, access to the unit......
