Offline | Dealer says putting new Engine, How Can I tell? Hello everyone, So...My dealer screwed up on an oil change. They forgot to screw some cap in properly, and as a result, all my oil leaked out and my engine burned out. Since it's their fault everything is covered, BUT I am a lilttle worried they might want to screw around and put in a refurbished engine. I've let them know I want a brand new engine and they SWEAR that when they replace an engine they always put in a new one (he called it remans or something like that). My question is...how will I be able to tell that it is indeed a new engine? Anyone had this problem before? Let me know!!! Thanks, Worried as hell that my MINI will never be the same again |

| New Mini Specialists | We have had to rebuild and engine from parts of two different engines before, its is not a cheap job as there is a lot of work, and new engine parts required. My concern is that the engine is probably quite screwed up inside if all the oil leaked out, as it would have been running dry which would have scored the bore. The cost of polishing/boring it out would be quite a lot as they would have to completely strip the engine so i assume that it will brand new. Also there aren't that many mini engines around for them to use a reconditioned one. Why dont you ask the dealer "How do i know that it is new?" and see what they say.\ Andrey |

Offline | Hi, A "remanufactured" engine is standard procedure for a warranty engine replacement from BMW. What happens is that a "blown engine" goes back to BMW. They throw everything away, apart from the engine block. This is checked to makesure that there is no structural damage. The engine is then rebuilt with all new parts, pistons, head, etc etc etc. This is built under strict factory conditions, eg controlled conditions to ensure no contamination of components with dust etc. By law they are not allowed to use these engines for new cars, but are allowed to use them for warranty replacements. They will not rebuild the engine from your block. You will get an engine that has been rebuilt some time ago, at the factory. This is as good as a new engine, and it is way better than having an engine rebuilt in a dealership or workshop. In fact, there are some theoretical advantages from having a block that has allready been heat cycled and "seasoned" etc. Some of the BMW factory racecars from the 70's and 80's were purposely built from blocks of customers street cars that had been returned to the factory, because of some perceived engineering advantage. I have lost the link, but there was an interesting thread on this on the roadfly forums some years ago However, as Lohen points out, I can't imagine there are too many returned mini engine blocks sitting around at the factory, so it is possible you may get a completely new one. Cheers Robbo Mods: GO MADDIE and SPARKY! |

Offline | Interesting enough a couple of years ago, my wife's new Suzuki Grand Vitara had an engine failure at 5 weeks, and we got the 'a new engine would be put in' story. On further investigation, Suzuki can order replacement engines without engine numbers, so that the original engine number can be stamped in. In the end, I negotiated a new replacement rather than the replacement engine. Just my 2 cents. |

| New Mini Specialists | I think you are referring to the era when they built their turbo formula one engines from blocks that have been weathered. Weathering normally involved things like leaving the block out in the rain outside and p*****g on it and etc. It was the time 1500bhp formula 1 from around 2 litres capacity ![]() Imagine having one of those!!!! it wont last very long but you could go very far in that time....... Why and where from??? An what on earth are you planning to do with them?? Andrey |

Offline | It is reasonable to expect the dealer to make good their mistake. It is also reasonable to expect that there is some sort of additional compensation for the inconvenience / hassle. Have you had any luck on this front? Paul The speed of the hand deceives the eye and sometimes blackens it! |
