[MINI Cooper JCW soundkit] Replace JCW Air Box for K&N open Air Box

Hi

I have a MINI Cooper with the JCW sound kit.
This include:
- JCW Air box
- JCW Exhaust
- JCW special engine management software

Now I want to replace the JCW Air filter for a K&N/Pipercross or other "open" Air filter.

My friend fitted one today and the sound is awsome Much better sound compared to the JCW Air filter (closed air box). I think a open air filter makes a much better sound.

My question is:

Can I replace the JCW air filter without any problem? Is the JCW software optimized for working with the JCW air filter? Is it possible to replace the air filter without causing any problem? Will the JCW software works with the new ait filter?
Dont want to damage the car by using a different air filter

changing air filters will cause no problems, and will sound a lot better. it is a shame that with the price of the jcw sound kit that they couldnt include the open air filter

it is a shame, specially as on the S Works kit, its a cone filter in a box...

Must admit I prefer the sound of the JCW kit to an open cone induction kit.

I can't see any reason why an open cone kit wouldn't work.

Will you be removing the extra air induction bits that JCW added? Does that not mean you will have a hole in the back wall of your engine bay?

you would need to remove the entire air box, and the 'sound pipe' that goes towards the bulk head.

ollymale, it doesn't actually touch the bulk head...it mearly points in that direction.

Does the JCW soundkit has a cone air filter or panel filter? Is it worth te replace it with e.g a K&N?

the sound kit has a 'free' flowing panel filter.

to get any more benefit you would need a cone filter instead.

Would be tricky cause the use of "open" cone air filters is strictly forbidden in Belgium, except for racing purposes, and I think in the Netherlands as well. You'll never pass the technical car inspection with K&N or other brand under your bonnet.
Also mind resposability in case of an accident: car needs to have conformity certificate. So modified could mean no insurance

Greetz,

Jan

But back to topic ...
I can't understand your decission Maaij.
At first you took the Works Soundkit, that ain't cheap, and now you're thinking of changing? So I guess you're not that satisfied of it?

@ Minty
Would a filter change really benifit the JCW install?

I do agree Morty,

Would next step be installation of a Milltek or Remus exhaust and a MTH tuner file?
Think that once you choose a "way of tuning", you better stick to it. Except when one is looking for the maximum power and torque. Then you 're done with +/- € 300 at the local tuning shop ...

Wouldn't understand why choosing for yellow walls with a green carpet and a blue sofa to refurbish your house. Does it need to match?

Yours truly,

Jan

I like the JCW exhaust so dont need to replace it and already have a special tuner file with the MTH manifold fitted on my Cooper

Dont think there will be any problem to replace the JCW filter to another one. The filter will work well with the exhaust.
