Question 15%, 17%, 19%, I'm Confused!!!

Ok, so i am getting a mini cooper here in a couple of months from the cooper dealership in denver. I was looking online and found out about the reduction pulleys. My question is what do they do, and whats the difference between the different degrees.

You wont have to worry about it as the cooper doesn't have a supercharger.

Black Cooper

basically pbmaniac - the smaller the pulley (ie 19% reduction eg. 19% smaller than std) means that it will be spinning faster at the same engine rpm thus creating more boost, thus theoretically creating more power. reduced pulleys on their own do increase your MCS's performance (although you have an MC) but not as worthwhile imho as say a reduced pulley , belt etc - which spins faster aswell as an ecu remap and or induction kit - to maximise cold intake gases, ecu remap deals with the increased volume/mixture and other technicalities while the smaller pulley spins faster making the whole thing make sense. "hopefully"

then theres larger Intercoolers and one ball bypass exhausts lol - u can do a search for that though :-)

hope thats a bit clearer

So you intend to buy an MC and then fit a Supercharger later....?

Dont think this is possible.... has anyone else gone this route?

Would probably be easier to fit a turbo to an MC rather than a SCer.

You would need to fit a new engine from an MCS, as the engine internals are different on the MCS. Strengthened, Piston Oil Spray etc etc...

A 19% reduction pulley is pushing the limits of supercharger at sustained high RPM ...

It's harder on the supercharger. Intake air temps run higher. Belts tend to break easier.
If you don't mind the effort to take a bit more care then the 19% is OK.

ditto! I'm still tossing up between the two. Randy Webb claims that he makes more BHP with a 15% due to higher intake temps.

Also, ppl say that the 19% pulley spins the SC beyond its limits, but it doesn't redline the supercharger, even at 6950 RPM...do ppl say that cos of the high intake temps, cos none of the 3 different pulleys (15, 17, and 19), redline the supercharger with the stock redline...

BTW obehave, what do you mean when you say "take a bit more care." Do you mean keeping the revs down?

DIY What about warranty?

I too just ordered a '06 MCS. Intake, exhaust, remapped ECU and pulley are some of the things I'm also planning on upgrading. My understanding from talking with the dealer is that intake, exhaust modifications will not affect your Mini warranty. But remapped ECU and pulley change do. I figure ECU is easy to hide but a smaller pulley is a dead giveaway comes service time. What are you guys doing about this?

most of the owners dont have warranty anymore, warranties about to run out, or plain out dont care about warranty.

Nos-ing it all the way home...
