DIY OBX Header Should it glow red ?

Hi
I have just finished putting on a OBX header with a short flex connection mated with the standard cat . I have just taken it out for a fast run and thought I would take a look under the bonnet on the way back.To my surprise when I looked at the header it was glowing a nice cherry red colour. Is this normal because when I had the standard header I never took any notice and never looked ! It soon cooled down and looks OK.
Anyone any comments ,do they all do it ?

Regards Tony

No worries - just enjoy the header. Did you feel that it improved performance?

Quite common on performance cars driven hard.

Take a look at this.
http://trolltuner.com/viggen/Video/GenuineHot.wmv
That was with a cast iron manifold which takes a lot more heat to cause it to glow.

The glowing is generaly not an issue with quality manifiolds/headers since they are manufactured with high temp stainless steel.

Turbo cars often tend to glow under full throttle. If you are worried about it then just check the engine bays regualrly to make sure that nothing has suffered from heat. If any problem develops wrap it in exhaust wrap it will protect the stuff around it.

Hi asinn
Did you find it easy to fit the heat shield back on ? I had to bend the sides out and straighten the top , it fits but only 3-5 mm clearence in places from the pipes. It has changed the exhaust note to a deeper tone not sure yet wether any performance gains .
What kind of heat coating did you get.

Does the obx header pass TUV?( sorry i dont know the equivalent of that in UK) Here in spain things are getting bad with the technical inspection of the cars and we need the exhaust system to be homologated for passing the inspection. Thanks

I doubt the OBX passes TUV inspection as I brought it from America and I think it is manufactured in the Far East.I have put the standard BMW Mini cat on the end of it so it will definitely pass emission tests,When fitted you hardly see much of it once the heat shields are fitted.

what size are the primaries on the obx header???

your std cat might be restricting the flow too much hence the build up of heat?

i am not sure it will pass the emission test or not, but obx is a exact copy of Supersprint, so i assume it does pass the test if u keep the orginal Cat on.

with performance, i did notice some performance gain, but i also notice that the car stall much easier than b4, and also the fuel consumption went up a little.

However I am using a AMD onecilck map that only take into account of my cat back exhaust, intake and pulley, i am in the process of getting it updated, hopefully that will add a few kw to the car.

with the heat shield, i did have to bent the shield abit to fit it back in, but the exhaust sound the same, but after fitted the heat shield u can feel the engine bay is not as hot as
b4.

I used Jet Hot coating on the header.... i am quite happy with it, I have the supersprint cat back exhaust, after installing the header i do feel the exhaust is a little bit louder but just by a little, and when u down shift the exhaust make this popping noise.... which sound pretty cool......

I have checked the header again on the way home tonight ,a distance of 4 miles at speeds of only 30-40 MPH.I pulled onto the drive ,left the engine running and popped the bonnet.I could see the primaries from the headers where glowing a dull red in the dark.I cant see how it would be the cat restrighting the flow as it is a standard one welded onto the flexy coupling and the note of the exhaust seems louder. The pulses you can feel from the tail pipes seem very powerfull.Has anyone noticed their standard exhaust showwing signs of getting this hot.
