Scotland Track days

Hey all !!

Iv got a track day coming up on the 19th, ill just be on the 1.4 mile I was just wondering if anyone has any tips on preparing for such an event to get the best out of the car and a start on the other cars?
  • I fill up with optimax so ill be doing that anyway
  • Was thinking about more octane points and i notice Lohen do Millers oil feul treatment and there is a +4 octane points one, has anyone tried this?
  • Also ill be checking my oil levels too make sure they are okay
  • The back seats will be coming out
  • And she will be getting washed and waxed
All tips and experiences will be much appreciated! I got 15.3 sec on the 1/4 mile when my mcs was standard so im hoping to beat that

Willie

ScottishcooperS,

When was the last oil change on your car? If it was more than 3-5K ago then I would personally have an oil change done before the trackday (I do them myself; dead easy ) and also after the trackday. If you wanted to skimp on one of the changes, the pre-trackday change is not THAT essential, but dump the oil after the trackday if you are doing sustained mid-high RPM runs.

The stock MCS oil cooler keeps the oil at 210-235 deg F on track and the high levels of constant heat may have detrimental effects on the lubricating quality of the oil.

As has been mentioned, whilst on track run with roughly 1/2 a tank of fuel but be careful not to run out while you're on track...your car's economy will be somewhere around 12mpg while you're caning it remember Just bring a 'Jerry' can or two of Optimax; an extra 20-30 Litres should suffice again, depending on how long the day is. If there is a petrol station near the track, don't worry about carrying petrol about!

Most important of all, race your own race if you know what I mean. If this is your first outing on track take it easy for the morning while you accustom yourself to the track and the characteristics of your car. Don't be disheartened if you are not keeping up with others, you don't know their experience level nor car mods etc, so just enjoy the experience in you own private way, and give a wave when a loon such as myself overtakes you on two wheels

Have a great day out!

Henry

How about turning off the traction and letting a few psi out of the front tyres for more grip? What was your terminal speed last time? In my Boxster I can't remember my time, but saw about 100 when I crossed the line.

Do they prepare the track??

Do they glue the track?

Did your 60ft vary during the day??

What do you shift at??

Have you been on a rolling road??

If they do prepare the track then you want to be first up there because most street tyre cars lift the rubber up off the track.

It is a rule off thumb to shift at 500rpm above your peak rpm, without a rolling road session you wont be able to tell that.

The only other way is to try shifting at 6500 on a couple of runs then 6800 on a couple.

Good Luck

Hi heres some advice on how to get a good time.;-20psi max in the front tyres, 45psi in the back, traction off, get the car only 'just into staged' (ie as far BACK as possible), hold 4000rpm clutch pedal on the floor NOT on the biting point, let the other car go, count to 3 to compose yourself, let the clutch out quickly and fully, control the wheelspin on the THROTTLE by watching the rev counter and maintaining revs between 4-6K, do full throttle gear changes at 6200rpm, dont put it in second just because your rev counter says 7000rpm, you are probably only doing 8mph hence the point about controling the spin with your right foot (never the clutch) .You will bog down if you change at 8mph!
Regards Roland GT Tuning
ps your reaction time can read 34minutes and 23 seconds, your run time can still read 13.9 seconds though (example)

It was poor weather conditions so the times were poor as the track was wet and
had no grip. I beat everything i came up against except a cooper s works, but it
only beat me once and i beat it more Was a good day out tho and was more
a day for racing other cars rather than the clock because of the conditions.

Some pics of the day

Minipaul and me going head to head

On the way down

Cheers for the reply Roland.
