Wheel Studs

Has anybody replaced their wheel bolts with wheel studs? What length did you use? How far does the stud extend past the end of the nut on a stock MINI wheel?

Thanks for the help.

I'm looking to make this same mod. Will someone measure their stock bolts, full length, not just the threaded area, so I will know what to look for? My S has a week 42 build, so it will be another 6+ weeks until I get mine.

I purchased 40mm studs and nuts from BMP Designs. They are about 10mm too long for my purposes (can't put the centercaps back on), but depending on the wheel or spacer you use they might work fine.

Please forgive my ignorance regarding this subject, but what's the difference, and why would I/you care to change these. - Not being smart here, am really interested.

I myself have been pondering aftermarket wheels and have been cursing the 4x100 pattern - so few choices compared to 5 lug patterns.

What we're talking about are the bolts holding on the wheels. The MINI has bolts that screw into the hub and hold on the wheel. For racing purposes it is easier to use studs (just the threaded part of a bolt) permanently mounted in the hub and seperate lugnuts that hold on the wheel.

I agree the 4x100 bolt patern has some limitations, but I have heard that several wheel manufactures will be offering more styles in 4x100 due to the popularity of the MINI.

If you really want a 5 bolt pattern you can do what one of the aftermarket tuners did for their show car (Hamann ?) and switch the entire brake system (hub, rotor and caliper) to a compatable 5 bolt system $$$$

Everything is fixable

One other consideration why the changing from bolts to studs. For the guys going to After market wheels. Its easier to get fancy designer lug nuts and locking lugnuts than ones in bolts. Just go to a local Autoparts store and try to find the bolts in chrome vs all the different Nuts you can find (no im not talking about the guys behind the counter)

Really-- I have found that there are PLENTY of wheels that fit--our bolt pattern is virtually identicle to a honda civic.

I'm actually wondering if I can use the bolts that came with my 15"s when I fit my new 17" S spokes later this week, or do I have to buy a new set........anyone done this already?

Thanks for the info. How does one go about changing from bolts to lugs (how much work?)

As for the comment about wheel options... While there are a fair amount of 4x100 options there are numerous 5-bolt wheels that are not offered in 4x100.

I think you may have hit the nail on the head with your comment about 4x100 & Honda - in that most wheel mnfr's producing 4x100 aren't making them for the Mini. They are outfitting mostly boy-racer types & the styles that appeal to that crowd. There are SO many cars that fit THAT profile, so they follow the $ - not what looks best on our Minis.

IMHO
Most aftermarket wheels do not mesh well with Mini's organic form.

How To.

Installing wheel studs is very simple on the MINI.

Jack up the car. Remove the wheels. Screw the new studs into the 4 holes in each hub (use some thread lock) tighten. Put wheels back on. Screw on new lug nuts. Torque. Lower car.

Simple.

Some other cars require removing the brake rotor, etc. etc.

How do you tighten the studs? (When you're initially threading them into the hub.) It doesn't seem like you'd have much purchase. Do you use a special tool, or can you thread the lugnuts onto the studs and then tighten the whole assembly?

Probably a dumb question, but there it is.

DaveNagy, thread two open nuts and jam against each other. Apply thread lock on the opposite end of the stud that will go into the wheel hub.

Use your wrench on the jammed nuts to screw in the stud. Presto!

Actually the studs have a 6mm allen head. Just tighten with 6mm allen wrench.

Anyone thinking of replacing the Mini hubs outright?

i would be careful with replacing the hubs there may be distinct warrantee issues regarding the ABS system.

It should work... one of the tuner companies has done it. You would also get the benefit of even larger brakes.

Thanks for the Breyton link!

Question though: How do you know that they've done the conversion? I can't find anything more than a photo of a Mini Cooper with 7x18 rims. ...And it does look FAT!
