K&N 57i Induction Air Filter advice...

Hey, ....

I'm looking at getting a new air filter, possibly the K&N 57i from MiniSport. I'm wondering if anyone has any advice as to fitting, or generally if they're any good. Or, in fact, if the Pipercross is any better... I have a One, and I'd like to maximise it's power really.

Any advice is much appreciated. .

Many thanks,

Dave.

imo the filter is a little to large for the engine bay as it wears the soundproofing away under the bonnet, but the kit as a whole is good quality

Yeah common problem that. Even the genuine JCW filter does that

Had my soundproofing replaced under warranty and the filter finely adjusted and now it doesn't do it.

You will probably find you'll lose power with the induction kit on the One. On a rolling orad day I attended a couple of years ago. The most powerful One was the standard one! Those with aftermarket induction and exhausts all lost power. None had any remaps though which could explain it.

Far better IMO getting it chipped.

It was acceptable in the 80's

Agreed. And I had to take my sound proofing off due to my OMP strut brace and Pipercross filter. I am sure it will all fit but it was just a tad too tight...so I thought it would be better to remove it.

The 57i is an induction kit, not a Cold Air Intake (CAI)....thats why some Coopers and ONEs running it and similar products develop less power than a stock or replacement panel filter car. The 57i has the problem that it can pull bigger airflow, but that air is not nessesarily cold! The air its pulling in is the air in the engine bay...therefore its warm...which will not enhance power it will deminish it because the engines burn is less efficient. My advice go for a sheilded intake...the Piper Viper has a degree of sheilding so it performs better than most....plus I think it has a direct feed from an external air source, rather than the stale air in the engine compartment.....but CAI like the minimania one I believe are best on the ONE/Cooper.

My advice is steer clkear of open cone filters that are not shielded or have a direct feed from the outside/cold air! Buy a sheilded CAI, more expensive but will give you power not lose it! The alternative is to fit a panel filter like K&N or Piper etc and then use a replacement pipe for the inlet pipe...choose a smooth silicane style rather than the corrugated type used by the MINI as standard. This will give imporved flow (sheilded from some warm air by the standard box) and feed air in a nice smooth flow through the smooth silcone pipe....creating less turbulance on the air flowing into the intake on the engine.

Thanks Richard, and everyone for the advice.

In the end I went for a Bluefin superchip - bit on the more expensive side, but a great buy. I think now I'm going to concentrate on handling and ride and maybe an exhaust, but the advice to go for a viper has helped for future reference, many thanks .
