K&N typhoon?

A while back I remember reading that someone had spoken with a K&N rep about an air intake kit for the MINI--has anyone heard anything else about possible K&N products? Any idea on when they will be available?

I wrote the tech on their web site and recieved a reply that due to an "overwhelming response with this system we are currently delayed in providing quality responses to our customers."

Spoke to a guy from K&N last week, he said that the replacement filters are now available & the 57i Induction kit should be ready in the next 3-4 weeks He said it would be around the £70 margin He did say that they have had problems in develpoing the kits as they didnt want a 90 degree bend in the pipe

I installed a K&N filter on my Cooper

Last week, after installing a custom-made free-low exhaust system, I asked the Mexico K&N dealer for a Mini filter and to my surprise, in about 5 minutes, I had a cool K&N kit installed. The kit is a normal free flow filter with no heat shield.

I was told that the heat shield version will be available in two months.

The roar (combined with the exhaust tone) is simply addicting!!!

I can certainly feel an extra punch in acceleration.

I will take some digital pics and post them later on.

Cheers!

Thanks for the info. I'm curious about how effective the heat sheild is and if it will use the stock cold air ducting?

I am considering getting the intake kit from monster mini (http://monstermini.com/parts.html). I emailed them and the kit uses a K&N filter. They plan to start shipping in a couple weeks and are accepting pre-orders. I am hesitant because of concern about taking hot air from under the hood rather than using the cold ait feed of the stock filter. Any thoughts on adding a filter like this? To order it, or wait for a cold air induction kit?

2 concerns with kits so far:

1 - open exposure to heat from engine - as everyone is pointing out. I have a rigged system in my GTI that is 1/2 stock airbox and 1/2 open to engine compartment/grille wiht a K&N. You can seat-of-the-pants feel the difference between a hot day and on a cool/cold day, also between city/highway speeds.

2 - open exposure to moisture - that engine compartment is small, and splashing water might be able to make it's way up there, or leak down in there... not sure as i don't have my MCS yet, but exposed it just seems a little risky in wetter climates...

I'll be awaiting some form of shielded box/etc...

Racing filter kit

We experimented with several filters and intake tubes. Our best dyno results were as follows. The base line test was 144.0 H.P. with 131.3 ft lb of torque. The maximum boost was 11.5 P.S.I. after we installer our racing filter kit, the max. boost went up to 13.2 P.S.I. with dyno results of 156.9 H.P. and 143.4 ft lb of torque.
This is a total gain of 12.9 H.P. and 12.1 Ft lb of torque.

Also great news! Supersprint has completed the complete "S" exhaust system developement. This includes headers to tail pipe, with metallc racing cat. The vehicle they used had a base line of 163 hp. Their final results with headers racing metallc cat, and free flow rear twin mufflers was 182 hp. That's a gain of 19hp. I hope to have dyno charts and write-up posted in a few days.
Now don't add the 12.9hp to the 19.0hp, I don't think that is realistic. I will however do a few dyno runs with both items installed on the car, as soon as we get our sample exhaust system.

See the filter kit here

BMP questions...

Thanks for the reply, but I have a few questions about the BMP Filter you might be able to answer.

Is the filter fully enclosed or shielded?

Is it a cold air feed or taking air from the engine compartment?

If it's taking hot air from under the hood what will happen with the kit installed in a cooper without an intercooler--Any idea how much hp gain for a cooper?

And lastly, any word on how much will it cost?

Thanks.

The filter kit is shielded. The stock air intake is retained. so we are getting a high pressure of outside cool air at the filter. I will be honest, I have experimented with under hood temps on both BMW's and this Mini "S" The dyno is a little deceptive. When running on a dyno your traveling at 100 M.P.H. standing still. So all the loads and heat that is created does stay under the hood. But in real life at a 100 M.P.H. the wind coming at the hood is really incredable. And the under side of the vehicle creates a vacuum that draws all the engine compart heat out from under the car. And the exhaust heat that would normally linger in the engine bay on the dyno, is really none existent on the highway. And the gains we show werre on the dyno, which makes me believe they would be better on the road.
I don't think the cooper would get as much of a gain since What really happened with the "S" was that the added air permitted the boost to go up by over 1 P.S.I.
