Question Timing Belt Maintenance Guidelines?

Hello everybody,
Dumb question here...

Does the MNI Cooper have a timing belt? If so, when should it be replaced? By a dealer or can any mechanic handle it?

I have a 2002 MINI Cooper with 66,000 miles on it and I'm guessing I should start paying attention. Thanks!
Carter

Hey there,

If memory serves, the MINI has a timing CHAIN - no need to change it, unless you are rebuilding the motor. It should last the life of the engine.

Definitely timing chain, http://www.tritecmotors.com.br/english/motors/16L.htm#

As bigcoyote says it should last the life of the engine

MINI's do use a timing chain, and its pretty durable. Only worth changing if you are doing an engine rebuild. If you are changing it, the chain should only cost you around £30 from a MINI dealer.
