Hey I'm a new owner of a 04' Mini Cooper S and I have the same problem. When shiftng to second usually and fourth also it feels as though the stick is rubbin on something. It doesn't sound to good but Im dealing with it. This is my first stick car and I've got the hang of it pretty well, just can't figure out why it's makes this scrapping noise when shiftiing. I have the clutch fully depressed and im not using a lot of force when shifting. Help us out people!

Hi,

Not used the forums for a long time but have now covered 19,500 miles in a Sept 2004 build Cooper which has demonstrated this problem from new. I have mentioned it to the selling dealer who drove the car and stated it was normal and everything was functioning correctly so they were not concerned. The car has recently been to a different dealership and they can't find the fault (think I will be paying another visit soon).

The best I can describe it as is a knocking, clicking or noisy linkage operation. You can recreate it by pressing and releasing the clutch pedal but on my car it appears to get louder after a long journey (by long I mean a regular 200 mile trip I make twice a month). There occasionally feels like there is resistance from the pedal when it is being depressed too. Occasionally when briefly holding the vehicle in gear on the bite of the clutch the noise becomes a continuous rattle which you can also feel through the pedal.

I would welcome any advice on whether this is normal or people have had it cured on their vehicles. The fault didn't seem to be apparent on the 2006 Mini One loan car I had.

Regards
Chip

This bit sounds like it might be the clutch release bearing, which could account for the knocking noise as well. But if that were the case, you would hear/feel it on every gearchange, not just certain ones.

Some of the Coopers have had gearbox probs in the past, this link probably matches your problems closest:http://www.mini2.com/forum/faults-fi...light=knocking

Don't know whether you've checked that one or not (apologies if you have)
