Cooper Cylinder head [which to get]

Hi

I want to get more info about modded cylinderheads for a Cooper (non S)

What cylinder head is the best to get?
- Cylinder head, ported and polished-standard valves
- Cylinder head, ported and polished-big valve head

See:
http://www.minispeed.co.uk/new_mini/...ct&id=head-std
http://www.minispeed.co.uk/new_mini/...t&id=head-bigv

I have a MTH manifold, Playmini exhaust and a 58mm TB. Does this fitts both heads without any mods?

I think I need larger inlet and exhaust valves if I want to go for a Cylinder head, ported and polished-big valve head right?

Other things I need? Or is it better to get a standard valve head?

Hi

The chap who does all the cylinder head work for BBR and loads of others is just up the road from me 'All Stage Cylinder Heads' in Croughton- this guy is the real expert, and should deal with you direct.

If you can get a spare std head, he'll do either option for a fraction of the cost of going through a dealer.

Or talk to Roland at GTT as he does a fair bit of cooper tuning, and should know which way to go. After he rebuilt my engine I would have complete confidence in him to do the job including fitting etc, rather than getting stuff done by different people.

quite honeslty, i would not buy a head that was done, but do as shazam recomends and getting one done. That way, who can know exactly what is being done, have things explained to you, so you know why or why not you need things done. Especially one that is sold for all the models, sure, they are all the same from the factory, but i could not belive that when i read it in the service book (even more suprising is that they use the same cam). Anyway, a cooper will need an entirely different work over than one that is going on an s (unless you want that extra 1/2 horse i wouldnt bother doing anything but oversize the valves on a s engine, and you can get that done on the cheap, plus valves, and maybe a bit of porting that you could handle yourself with a die grinder and a carbide bit. When you talk about normally aspirated heads, well, unless you really know what your doing, get someone who does to do it. you need to worry about velocity, vinturi effect, runner volumn, runner taper, runner shape, fuel/air seperation, preasur waves and the list goes on and on. Not to say you dont need to worry about this in an blower mill, but it is less prevelant worry on a street mill, and even a track mill, and the super charger effectivlily replaces all those things in what they are trying to achieve. Ultimaly, you can make the same horse power from a NA engine that you can from a blower motor, only it will cost you 3 or 4 times the money to do it because everything has to be right dead on, where as with a blower, so long as there is a runner and a valve, your good to go, unless of course you want that extra thousanth of a second on the drag strip (and thats the only place you will ever need it). But like i said, a NA engine is the complete other end of the spectrum where every little thing matters. So if the heads are the same for the cooper and the s, move on, its either a compomise head (which no one should buy then anyway), or completely set up for the s, and yes will work on a cooper, but it was not desiged to give peak performance on one. Long story short, spend the same money as buying one of those heads at a place that can flow bench, and custom mod for what you want the motor to do, and you will be way better off.
